Geodon, or Abilify to treat adhd | ADHD Information

Tardive dyskinesia is involuntary movements of the tongue, lips, face, trunk, and extremities. It is a rare side effect, and more often will affect elderly women, but stopping the medication may not stop the movements.

Weight gain is also a big consideration with both of these drugs, so I hope your daughter does better.

My 7yr old has been on over a dozen different meds without good success, still hyper, impulsive, etc. we have tried not only individual meds but different combinations as well, even some non-traditional drugs. He has now developed a tic (eye-blinking), which means he shoud no longer be on any of the stimulants.

The next thing to consider is a couple of drugs that are actually used to treat schizophrenia, but have been used for adhd and tics. My concern is......the side affects...specifically tardive dysinesia....it is a rare side affect ...but a possible one none the less. and has the potential for being permanant.  I have gone from pediatrician, to psychiatrist to pediatric neurologist and have incredible confidence in all these doctors (I am also a nurse) and the prescribing doctor has not seen one case of T.D. in over 20 years. I want to hear from any parents who have actually had any experience with these drugs...they scare the heck out of me..but we are probably going to have to try them, and I would sure like to hear something reassuring!

My son has ADHD, so these drugs aren't used frequently.

Katsie,

My daughter just started on Abilify for ODD.  We have been having pretty good results.  I haven't noticed any side effects yet.  She has been on the drug for about 3 weeks.  She had been on Risperdal which also had good results but she gained 11 lbs in about 4 months.  Can you tell me what Tardive Dysinesia is?  I have never heard of it.

Thanks, Mary
