Hi
I'm 99% sure next week I'll be diagnosed with ADD (Inattentive type). I was just curious what the starting doses of Ritalin for different folk out there tended to be???
Yesterday, I tried 15mg and then 4 hours later 10Mg and did not feel well at all, so I did not try a third dose. It seemed that all of my symptoms were worse! A few times I felt pretty dizzy. Today, I am trying 10/5/5. I had my first 10mg a little less than two hours ago and things a much better than yesterday, but I sill have a little trouble focusing in that I wonder from task to task more than I would like. My intial impression for me is that the 10mg is too little, but I definately don't want to go through the problems with 15 again.
Maybe it was the result of too much coffee in combination with the Ritalin. I am new to the medication, so I have no personal experience with the effects. Depending on how this day goes, I may increase it to 10/10/10. Perhaps also to 12.5Mb (taking a quarter instead of a half).
I am curious if other people have had similar experiences.

jimmo
ooops...
I wanted to add that with the 15mg doses I was also feeling anxious. Not "terrible" as mcw4rosy said, but they were obviously there.

Not at all too much. Do you have them all in the morning or is it a split dosage? What dose did they start you on?
I started out at 5 mg 2x daily. That was increased to 3x daily.
Then I was switched to 10 mg 2x daily. It has since been increased to 3x daily since I can't make it through my workday without it wearing off. It's been working well for me.
My doctor feels that ritalin should be the first drug
My doctor feels that ritalin should be the first drug
prescribed, so that's what I got. I started at 10mg.
twice a day. Moved up to 10 mg 3x per day, that's
working fine.
What makes you think you need 60-80 mg? That is
alot! Maybe try a lower dose first and just see how it
goes.
I've tried it before (illegally) so already know what dose is effective.... that would be split over 2 doses... The SR type last up to about 6hours.
rangikahuta38555.8175694444I'm 43 year old. Just diagnosed with ADD this Feb. I know I've been ADD
It's very doubtful they will give you ritalin.
I've already discussed treatment with the doctor, he said ritalin is the one he's going to try first if diagnosed with add. dexiamphet...... and ritalin are the only drugs funded by the government in new zealand, where I live. I said I wasn't prepared to pay big $$ for something not funded... so ritalin it will be.
Curiously why do you say that?

I am curious as to why you say that. I was "officially" diagnosed on Monday of this week (although I have known for a looong time). I also have inattentive type and my doctor prescribed methylphendate. There was no discussion at all of other drugs, except to say that "we'll see how it goes with the methylphendate."
I am in Germany so it is possible that this is either the "standard" medication or the health insurance won't pay for anything else, or perhaps some other factor. What is common elsewhere for inattentive type ADD?

In America they rarely use Ritalin for adults, I assumed you were in America. What dose have they started you on?
They will not give me Ritalin although that's the only thing that will help me. They will give me everything else, Adderall, Concerta, Strattera, all very expensive drugs. So I have to buy my medicine myself from Mexico. With our health care system it's all about marketing and promotions - doctors only prescribed "Hot" drugs. Older drugs are just forgotten because there are no advertising campaigns. In a way doctors are real suckers. :-) P.S. My profile says Japan but I'm an American and my post is talking about an American HMO. (Blue Cross)shinsetu_hito38548.7697337963I live in the USA and my psychiatrist prescribed me Ritalin with no problem (It was the first choice for my situation because of money issues - Ritalin is cheap).
Funny thing was that I told him I took someone else's Ritalin a few years ago and it helped my ADHD. He asked how much I thought would be a good dose and I said 10mg. He asked if I had any family history of drug problems. I said no. Walked out with a prescription for 10mg twice a day.
Oh yeah, back to the original question - your starting dose will probably be 10mg, 2 or 3 times a day.
In new zealand the maximum recommended dose is 60mgs/day for an adult. I've tried ritalin several times before and know that 60-80mgs a day will be required to see me right. Will it be a case of having to build up to that?? The doc knows I've tried it before and that it helps me. I'm hoping for the 20mg SR type as it's better for me top be dosing less often as I'm good at forgeting to take doses, or take them with me when I go out etc etc.
I started with Wellbutrin 300 mg a day - with 30 mg Ritalin LA about 5:00
