ADHD and Therapy | ADHD Information

I have been recently diagnosed with ADHD and from what I've read about it, it sure explains a lot about the last 38 years.

I am considering going into therapy and not just for ADHD; I've got some commitment issues that may or may not stem from the disorder.  The books make the point that I should be looking for a therapist who has experience with treating adults who have ADHD.

What have been peoples' experiences with therapy and does anyone know how to find a therapist with adult ADHD experience in the SF/Oakland area?

Thanks in advance.

I tried therapy and it didn't helped with my adhd. It helped slightly with my self esteem but after therapy I haven't noticed any change. Art therapy can help get your emotions/frustrations outside but the only therapy that I could imagine would help adhd would be cognitive behavioural therapy, which helps change the way you automatically think. Maybe a relationship therapist would help you challenge your relationship issues. I'm not sure how you go about getting therapy in the US, in the Uk you have to speak to your doctor and they refer you.

Good Luck

I agree with pretty_lost.  I take concerta and paxil and go to therapy.  However, being constantly aware of your actions and stopping any adhd symptoms in their tracks seems to be the only way to conquer it.  Therapy makes you think more about your "stuff" and then you can see where adhd is involved.  It helps boost your self-esteem because you realize why things happen the way they do.
