Increasing Concerta Doses | ADHD Information

Share

I am new to this forum & am seeking advice...

My son is almost 7 year old & was diagnosed with ADHD last December - he started concerta with 27 mg.  The effect was good, but by February, we needed to increase his dose to 36 mg as we noticed his behaviour reverting (although not completely back to before being on medication).  Now, 5 months later, he seems to be reverting a bit again - noticable increased hyperactivity & less cooperative throughout the day.  Also, the 36 mg dose does not seem to be lasting as long - seems to be wearing off before the 12 hours is over.   I worry at the possible idea he needs to increase his dose again.  Is this normal to have to keep increasing doses so frequently?  I've read the maxium dose for kids between 6-12 years is 54 mg and for adolescents it's 72 mg.  I worry he's only 7 years old & needs the maxium dose available for his age.  What happens if 54 mg even wears off early before he is over 12 years old?  Has anyone else experienced this?  Does anyone else have kids that are the same age on 54 mg or more? Your feedback would be greatly appreciated!

My son is 9 and we are having the same issues. The concerta worked great when we started him (36mg) but then it stopped working very well after about 6 months. We took him off for a little while and tried Strattera which did nothing for him and made him very angry. When we went back to the Concerta it seemed to work better again at the 36mg. Now things are sliding so we are considering bumping up to the 54mg when school starts. I hate to increase the dose because of the sleeping and eating problems. He hasn't gained a pound in the past year even though he has grown 3-4". We are also seeing a naturalpath in the meantime to see if that helps the situation.

Hi,

My son is 11 and was on 36mg for 1 year. Just when he turned 10 and went back to school last September the medicine did not seem to be working as well. Now he's on 54mg for almost a year and I do not want to bump him up to 72mg. ( right now 54 is still working.) Since my son is hyper and impulsive giving him a break from his meds is really out of the question. What I am trying is giving him 36mg for the summer and dealing with some of the behavior. Its alot better on 36 than nothing. This way I feel he will not get used to the higher dose. Also when he goes back to school in Sept 54mg will coninue to work. I can see your concern for the higher dose because your son is so young. Maybe you can lower the dose in the summer when there is no school back to 27mg so it can be increased back up to 36 in September. You may have to deal with some of the problems.        &nb sp;         &nb sp;         &nb sp;         &nb sp;         &nb sp;     Gladys
