Strattera Tolerance? | ADHD Information

Share
My son was diagnosed with ADHD 6 months ago.  The doctor put him on Strattera.  At first he became sleepy.  I took this to be that was a sign the medicine was working.

Soon the sleepiness wore off.  Since this side effect wore off does that mean that the effictiveness has also wore off?

Should I ask the doctor to increase the dose because he is developing a tolerence?

I tried to find ADHD drugs information on the internet for the answer.  It isd hard to find good information.  Many of the sites are trying to sell quack remedies.

The best ADHD database I found was
this one :  http://www.coreynahman.com/11_25_ADHD_drugs.html but this didn't address my concerns or say anything about kids getting a tolerance to Strattera.

The author of this database claims to have suffered from ADHD as a child.  I wrote to him but I have not recieved an answer.

Thanks I can't remember where, so I know that this isn't going to be proof, but I heard that there isn't any "tolerance" for Strattera.  I've done so much research in the last 4 days that it's all running together.  If I happen to find it, I will post the URL.  My husband & I are meeting with a doctor on 8/22/05 to start meds for our 11 year old son who has the inattention w/out hyperactivity.

My son has been on Strattera for 3 and a half months now and at first he had some sleepiness, but its worn off since then.  I don't see any changes in the effectiveness though. If you still see improvements in your childs behavior, then I wouldnt worried about.

No more side effects is a good thing

Strattera an an antidepressant in the SNRI class...like Effexor.  It is VERY weight dependent.  Like an antidepressant, you usually have to wait about 6 weeks to get the full effect of the medication, and you can not give "med holidays" like you can with stims.

our son tryed up to 36 and is 52lbs.He slept more while on it.We did do summer break. His home behavior got worse. He scored failing tests on it and can pass of it. This year decided no Strattera.I hope once his thyroid is fixed we will see changes also. Sleepiness is a side effect of the strattera. I don't think it is any indication that the drug will not work. Usually side effects wear off after being on a drug for a little bit--once your body adjusts to the new drug. I hope he has good success with the strattera. my ds has been on it for 3 years--it worked real well at first but over time hasn't done the best. He doesn't do well with the stims so our opitions are rather limited. bridget

My 11 Year old son has been on Strattera for three years. He was never sleepy because he also has anxiety. (We were looking forward to that side effect!)  He did develop hypersensitivity to smell, which has been an adventure! Because of the anxiety, he could not tolerate stimulants, they turned him from a nice quiet ADD to ADHHHHHD.

About a year ago it seemed to have stopped working, but in that time he had grown a few inches and added a few pounds. After adjusting the meds to his new ht/wt he was back on track.   At this time his Doctor and therapist decided to add Wellbutrin to his regimen and this combination has really improved his attention span and his general outlook on life.
