It’s depression NOT ADD | ADHD Information

Hi all,

I started to diagnose myself on the web and though I had ADD.  Started on Ritalin but did nothing but made me really slow.  Stoped that and the doc gave me Zoloft and I feel great again.

Can't really explain it and all my symptoms pointed to ADD but it turned out to depression afterall.

ADD and depression have very similiar symptoms for me and it really threw me off.  Learned a lot talking to a competant doctor.  Find yourself w/ a good doc and try different medicines.

Most family docs are not prepared to diagnose mental issues as I have discovered.
nothappy38551.6223032407I'm curious to know whether you had any ADD symptoms as a child? I know mine is ADD because I've always had the symptoms, it's not something that started later on. Although I've often felt depressed, I realize that depression can often occur as a secondary symptom of ADD.

I'm glad to hear you found something that works for you.

Absolutely!

When I was in my first psych assessment for ADHD - a good half of the time was spent to filter out if I was manic or chronically depressed.  My Psychiatrist said that manic or bi-polar depression looks extraordinarily like ADHD if you don't know what to look for.  He said that the major difference was that ADHD'ers normally don't get the extreme highs and lows that manic and bipolar get.  Also have to filter out if you are justifiably depressed about having ADHD - as that can seem to the uneducated as depression.

I'm glad you found the right path for you.  Noone should end up flapping about - not getting the help to find real happiness in life.  Have an awesome time getting back into life!!!!!!!!!

Well, that was that thing.  I never had hyperactivity as a kid and I thought I had concentration problems.  But this is something that can be argued between shear laziness or discipline issues.   I think many of kid's problems can be misread as ADD/HD.  Certainly there are those that do have ADD but it's very difficult diagnose.  How do you tell your doc what you have if you don't even know yourself?  That was my problem.  Most of us are just not educated enough to do so.

It's recently that I had symptoms that affected me to the point of not being able to work.  My mind was alway running, fatigue, and among other issues.

Boy, that Ritalin felt weird.  It felt like my mind and body got separated.  Don't want try that again.  I can't believe kids want to use this stuff to get better grades.  Zoloft had some side effects but was manageable and it worked at the end.

At first my doc told me that I may have depression but the symptoms I had just sounded so much like ADD and I pushed for ADD med.  I was still learning between the two at the time.  If I hadn't tried Zoloft, I would still be searching today.

Kids can suffer from depression..childhood depression can persist into adulthood. Just like ADD. Just cause you have symptoms since you were a kid does not mean it's not depression...
