How Long? | ADHD Information

Hi

We just started Ritalin on our 7 years old daughter.

How long does it really take to see any changes?

Katherine

Hi Katherine

My son Tom, who is 9 next month, was on Ritalin for over 6 months when he was 6 1/2 years old.  He started on 5mg 2 times a day.  The first 2 days were still the same, but after that we started to notice a difference in his behaviour.  I thought it was great and so did his school.  He seemed really calm and we could talk to him without him going off on one.

He is no longer on Ritalin as he had to have it increased to 3 times a day and was on 10mg per dose.  He now takes 54mg of Concerta once a day which is a slow releasing drug that lasts for upto 12 hours.  This starts 1/2 hour after he takes it in the morning.  He does still remain calm most days in the morning upto the afternoon.

Hope this helps

Hi Katherine,

My son started taking 5mil's of ritilan 3 times a day but we saw no change. It took 4 months to get the exact right dose for him which is not uncommon as each child is different so raising or lowering the dose is necesarry for a while. We saw no change at 5 mil's and most people dont as its the lowest dose possible. Finally, at 10 mil's 3 times a day, we saw a change within 20 minutes of my son taking the medicine. If your child is responsive to AHD medication, at the proper doseyou should see positive change in a very short period of time. Hope this helps

My son is on Ritalin, and we noticed a change with in a week. He is on 5mg 2 times a day. He has been on it since March of 2004 and we have seen nothing but great progress since. With that said, I have done some research and am learning that he may not have only ADHD, but also Sensory Integration Disfunction. The same meds would be used for this as well, but there is also OT that can help.

Hi Cindy.....my son also was diagnosed with both ADHD and Sensory Integration Dysfunction and I did indeed get him OT for two years and it helped tremendously. Just wanted to share

My 7 yr old daughter in on ritalin 3 times a day (15 mg, 15mg, and then 10 mg) we can see a change within a couple of days when we adjust her meds.  It did in the beginning take about 2-4 days to really notice the change.  Now she is on average really good.  We can tell when she grows or gains weight and meds need to be adjusted.   She doesn't have a problem with sleeping or eating either.  The only thing is to make sure that the last dose of the day isn't after 4 or it can cause a problem with them going to sleep.

Hi...we just started our 7 yr old son on Concerta last week.  I have seen some changes.  He is able to concentrate better and his printing has improved alot!  The Dr. told us we should see a change within a week maybe two.  So, hang in there you might not notice the changes at first.
