DR Phil

Anyone who is current on this disability knows that it is now called AD/HD, not ADD but yet Dr Phil and his best buddy, Dr Frank Lawless who gets over 5 grand for an initial consultation refer to the disorder as ADD.

I like that Dr. Phil separates ADD from ADHD and I HATE that the medical community insists that there is no such condition as ADD only ADHD predominately innattentive.  I am ADD as is my daughter- my son is ADHD.  They are VERY different disorders even though medicinal treatment is similar.

I would not take his word as law because I dont feel the agenda on the show about this topic is about helping parents, its about ratings and money.

Very true- it is good to be sceptical about medical advice given by: celebrities, authors, pharmacuetical companies, websites that sell miracle cure vitaman supplements- the list goes on and on

KidsInSpace38554.5529282407my dumb but missed almost the whole show.... is it pretty acurate or way out there... i recorded it at home.. just have to wait till i get off work

I seen that Dr Phil is doing a whole show today on adhd.... and is claiming if you think your child or know your child has this , that this is a must see......... i wonder how good and informative it is going to be... and if my hubby would benifit from it if i record it?

well i just wanted to let u all know it was going to be on today!!! i am sure it will make for good conversation later.......

do u think this would be a good way to give my hubby an insight on it?

Just cause something isn't proven doesn't mean it will not work. Alternative medacine has been around for years and at one time all there was. Case studies tell alot also. Most alternative treatments take longer time but given time can be sucessful.Unfortunately ins. companies won't cover them. These are considered contraversial.   Angry mom38554.3334027778Cool! What time does it come on? I will try and get my DH to watch too!

I give no credibility to Dr Phil on this topic for a few reasons. Anyone who is current on this disability knows that it is now called AD/HD, not ADD but yet Dr Phil and his best buddy, Dr Frank Lawless who gets over 5 grand for an initial consultation refer to the disorder as ADD. I dont know if this show is a rerun of the orginal show but the original show was about promotion of book sales for Dr Lawless and while many might feel there are many helpful tips in his book, what he writes about is nothing that hasnt been written about for years by others so it is not ground breaking news. Television is a very poor source of information more times than not because in order to capture an audience, they have to sensationalize and spew garbage. I have seen all too often how television, the media and the newspaper portray children with ADHD as total monsters and /or violent potential serial killers. Their solution is better parenting and a better diet so once again the message is sent that the parent is responsible for the social and emotional problems the child incurs on a daily basis. While a poor diet and the absence of a good behavior modification plan may cause the symptoms of ADHD to be more pronounced in some children, diet and lack of the proper discipline doesnt cause ADHD and as far as the cause, there are many theories but the jury is still out. This is just my opinion and while I always consider any and all information about ADHD, I also consider the source. While I think Dr Phil's advice on other topics has been very informative and helpful, he is not an ADHD expert and while even experts on ADHD could be wrong, I would not take his word as law because I dont feel the agenda on the show about this topic is about helping parents, its about ratings and money. From what I know about Dr. Phil .. he advocates bio-feedback.  Bio feedback has had success in some kids .. not in others and it's expensive.  HOWEVER .. now that I know its on, I'll watch it. You never know .. maybe he's got something else going on.My own opinion is be careful of Dr. Phil and his advice. Take it with a grain of salt. If you think something can help, use it, but he's no expert in ADHD and he brings on guests who promote books that use unusual approaches that are unproven. So defintely watch, but remember that he's no big authority and his guests are there to promote their stuff. If they had conventional approaches, the book wouldn't sell. Enjoy! I like Dr. Phil sometimes, but at other times I think he advocates approaches that are just too simple. Thanks for the info.  I'll watch.  Even though my daughter doesn't have ADHD>

I wonder if this is a repeat of the show he did before on ADHD...if so, it was all about behavior mod for the mother and the child...and diet.  Also, a plug to buy his "expert's" book.  The last show was a farce....maybe this one will be better.

This is wise advice.  I completely aggree.  His show is for ENTERTAINMENT!  His is a fast food brand of psychology.  Take it with a grain of salt for sure.  I'm mean his main guest today, Dr. Frank Lawlis?  Come on how can this so called expert call his book the The ADD Answer?  If he is such an expert, he would know that ADD is not even a DSM-IV diagnosis.  The only true diagnoses are ADHD with/or without hyperactivity.  I hate the perpetuation of ignorant views.  Isn't this issue already convoluted enough with out further confusion?

I totally agree with you and in this show he did make the distinction and although he kept promoting his friends book, there were far more accuracies in his statements this time. He mentioned that "one" parent wrote in about the last show complaining that Dr Lawlis was anti meds. I highly doubt it was one parent who complained about that show but whats really important is that in this show, a vast majority of the information was more accurate. Every parent has to decide what is helpful in terms of advice and what isnt but I think based on the feedback he got from the last show, he had no choice but to get it right this time. Thats a good thing because this is the only way parents can make informed decisions.

I agree that ADHD and ADD should be separated and I know for a fact that they are different. My son has one and my daughter has the other. I like Dr. Phill for some of his advise..... but he needs to take my two kids and get them ready for school for about a week......... Bio-Feedback my BUTT! He'd be shoving pills down their throut like we do! Hey... it works! No one should judge unless he/she has been there!

i wonder if i watch dr. phil, will i be an expert on adhd, angry housewives, weight loss, divorce, and child abuse?  just a few weeks ago we had that kid that watched infomercials say he knew it all from tv.  lmao

on a serious note, remember he gets PAID to do those shows.  He gets kick backs from the people he promotes on his show.  I like dr phil.  he's very honest, but he is still a tv personality.

The medical community calls the disorder AD/HD with 3 subtypes that being, Inattentive, Hyperactive/Impulsive or a combination of all 3. Too many times Inattentive type is missed because the child is not bouncing off the walls. This is something extremely significant that Dr Phil didnt mention. He talks about ADD and ADHD on this show but many people are unfamiliar with what these terms mean. ADHD is an umbrella term for all 3 subtypes. This is very pertinent information and awareness is crucial. Unfortunately, Dr Phil is a snakeoil salesman dressed up as a psychologist. Parents dont have to convince or justify giving medication to their child. It the professionals that have to convince the parents that the information they give is accurate. Misguided information delays good treatment and when people are looking to profit off of parents, the information can be very misleading. This is a very big red flag for parents to look for so actually, a these television shows could be vey enlightning because we learn with experience than more times than not, they are nothing more than informercials.
