Metadate CD | ADHD Information

hi lovemysunshine- how old is your son and how much does he weigh? mine is 7 and weighs 48 pounds- he's taking 20mg.- maybe thats not enough?  Does your son have and problems socially? im just wondering if maybe my son isn't on the right dosage- thanks

sjbmom-

My son will be 8 in September and weighs about 64 pds.  He is taking 40 mg of Metadate CD.  I don't think the age and weight have to do with the dosage of the meds, though.  It depends on how fast they metabolize the meds.  My son has a very high metabolizium (sp?)

At school he is liked by all the kids and gets along really well with them.  However, on the other end, he is extremely shy and when we are at the playground or somewhere, he will not go and play if there is someone else playing.  I was painfully shy as a child myself, so I don't think it all has to do with ADHD.

sjb mom -

My son is currently taking Metadate CD and it has been working pretty good for him.  No problems sleeping at all.  When the medicine wears off, he starts getting hyper and hungry.  He is taking 40 mg right now.

I don't have any experience with it but wanted to let you know that I'm glad its helping your son and glad he's doing really well! I bet that makes both mom and son happy!!  Is that a generic of Ritalin (sorry I'm a newbie about ADHD meds so not sure)!

Hope things continue to do well!

~Jenn~

Sorry, no experience with the metadate....but whereToStart- Metadate is actually a brand-name methylphenidate (same active ingredient as ritalin). Metadate CD is in the form of extended release capsules. Thank you deang008 for explaining it to me! I just know the med I have for my dd starts with meth so thought there was a similarity between the meds! Thanks again!

Jenn

Hey,

I am an adult, but have had an experience with the med CD. I don't know what kind of symptoms you are looking to control with it, but mine are concentration, hyperness, and just being able to sit down and enjoy something, without thinking of something else to do that is not as borning.I switched from concerta to the med. cd, because the concerta was not working. I liked the med CD, because it gave me a lot of concentration and helped with my hyperness. I gained more weight, because I could eat like eight hours later. I als ocould eat while I was taking the med. Not as much when it wore off, but more than with concerta. I did not have problems waking up or falling asleep. It was a smooth release of medication throughout the eight hours, but towards the last two it was hard to focus or stay calmAbout a year later I started getting social anxiety. I hated being around people because I did not know  what to do or what to say. Anytime I was talked to I would get embarressed. Even if it was like an every day conversation. Also I began to concentrate on one particular thing. Like if I wanted to read that was cool, but if I started to worry about someone or something-I thought about for like the whole time the med cd was working. Eventually the side effects were just to strong. So I swichted to something else. Anyways hope this helps. Your child may react totally different to it then I did. I just wanted to let you know that when I took it and it worked it was wonderful!

hello! i am new to this board! A friend of mine sent me the link, and here i am! My son is 7 and 1/2 years old... looooooong story short, has had TONS of testing and was diagnosed amongst other things, with ADHD. I filled the prescription for him, it is Metadate CD, 20 mg a day........ sprinkled over applesauce..... I will start my son on this medication tomorrow.......... I admit though, i am nervous giving it to him ......... any words of encouragement anyone can provide me would be most appreciated!!! I just feel so "alone" in all of this............

thank you so much!

WOW. my son is 7 and 1/2 and he weighs 83 pounds!! The doctors have said he is off the charts.... ever since he started his seizure meds back in December he has really put on the weight...... he doesnt look "fat" though.. he actually looks quite "proportionate".....

thanks for your reply- it really helps to get an adult version of what it feels like to be on meds- i keep asking him if he feels different but its hard for him to verbalize- i notice a decrease in appetite but he's starved about 8 hrs after i give it to him- so i prepare alot for dinner- sleeping hasn't been a problem- i'm wondering about when it becomes less effective- i'm hesitant in increasing his dosage- i don't want any of those nasty side effects- how will i know when i need to increase?

thanks for all the info- my son doesn't seem to have that same side effect of not wanting to be with people socially- his problem is more his impulsiveness- i can't tell you how many phone calls i've gotten from other parents complaining that my son bothered their kid, etc.  i've tried everything from punishing, rewarding for good behavior. he just started a socialization class where the psychologist role plays with about 5 other children various situations he will encounter socially-he wants to be and play with other children, he just can't, or doesn't know how?  Should the medication help with this aspect of adhd?

Well, since I am older I don't have problems playing with children. I was not diagnosed until I was 19. So I did not have the experience of taking meds as a child. As a child I did not have problems with fights or implusities with people I played with children fine. I just hated nap time or times when I had to sit still, but for some reason I guess the teachers made me sit still. I would do things that would hurt myself not other people. But nothing to impulsive. Like for instance on the spur of a moment I would have to go do something like shop or just drive around. I had problems sitting still. I do remeber getting into one fight at school, but other than that I was fine. IN highschool,I had problems sitting in school, but it was normal because my classmates also wanted to get up and walk around. Just not as much. The medication did control my impuses. I was not as hyper, but later made me not want to do anything. So it did work on that aspect of the ADHD. I think that all meds work different on people and help control different aspects differently. I think the psychology thing is a good idea. I just mostly take the meds so i can sit still and study, but have never had a problem socially. Hope this helps

Well,

I do not know when all these side effects started. It is still hard for me to pinpoint. I am on the verge of trying to figure that out right now, because i am going to explain them to the doctor. It was like the side effects were always there , but just kept getting worse and worse! I am usually a out going person, but being on the CD made me less social. Um I was on a high dose and this summer(since school is out) I took less, but the side effects were there except at a lesser of extent. It is hard to explain. LIke with the higher dose I don't want to be around anyone. I would think you could probably tell with a child, because he or she would probably not want to do anything. But of course all side effects are different from person to person. Another thing that was totally weird that happened was I slept a lot. I could usually go on like 5 hours of sleep, but when the weird side effects started I slept for like 12 and could still sleep. To increase I do not know the answer. I am still trying to figure out if with raising the dose to get positive sides of the meds will just increase the neg? I guess I would ask your doctor to be sure. But you will be able to tell a difference when the med is not working....Good luck. Ask me if you have any other question I have been taking the med for year and a half. I liked it until all the side effects started happening. Just make sure to tell you doctor right away if your son has side effects. I failed to do so, because I did not want to switch the meds, cause I could concentrate. I think sense I waited for so long and then told him about them He thought it was something that just came on and wants to switch me to Straterra. I don't like the idea..so now i am doctor shopping..at least for a second opinion.

Sorry so long...just want to tlet you know all the info I can, because i love it when people share their experience with me

does anyone have experiences with Metadate CD? My 7 yr. old son is on 20mg- he seems calmer yet he had alot of trouble controlling his impulses in the school setting- summer is easier- he's still on it, yet the camp says he's doing really wellhi ilovemykids- we started metadate about 1 yr. ago- started off at 10mg, went up to 15 mg., the school kept calling regarding behavioral stuff and the pscyhologist upped the dosage to 20mg. in March. On 10mg and 15 mg i noticed no side effects.  Once we went to 20mg, my son (who is 7 1/2 and weighs 48 lbs) really doesn;t want to eat during the day.  The pediatrician isn't concerned- he is also very small-4 ft.- i should say he is starved about  8 hrs. later and eats a great dinner and lots of snacks after dinner- they told me to be concerned if he starts losing weight- other than that he sleeps really well, he doesn't have any other side effects- i notice that the medicine just 'takes the edge off'- his personality really doesn't change, he's just calmer- i kept him on it for the summer because frankly im afraid to take him off- hes in day camp and i dont want any trouble Hope this helps

Socialization clases are excellent for children with ADHD and when children are experiencing maximum benefit from the medication, all other interventions and tools used to manage the symptoms are much more effective Socialization classes are beneficial because they do teach the child how to be social as they learn how to pick up on social cues. For many ADHD children, just putting them into a social activity with the hopes they will become more social may not work as they dont learn from other children.  Learning through role playing is most effective for many. Just a side note to parents, stimulant medications are not weigh based and the medication does not lose its effectivenes for every child. If this happens, its always best to consult your childs doctor because there are a multitude of reasons why the meds may stop working. Sometimes it takes a while before the right med and the right dose is found for that particular child because the goal is maximum benenfit and minimal side effects . I hope this helps

My 14 year old takes medadate, 70mg in the morning and in the evenings if he has trouble concentrating for homework/tests he'll take 10mg of Focalin.  We love it. He's had no side effects either so far :::knocking on wood:::

Hi, my son is 7 and weighs 41 pounds and is on 10mg of the metadate CD.

I have a question for the other parents of children who take this, how do you get your child to take it? Do you open it and put it in something? I ask because my son just refuses to swallow the pill and I have no idea how this is going to work when school starts here on the 25th.

I need advice please!

hi- metadate cd can be opened and sprinkled on applesauce, yogurt- be careful though, the inside of the capsule has very tiny little beads that can be lost easily- when my son was on 15 mg, he swallowed one pill, (10mg), and we had to give him half of the other pill (i sprinkled it on a teaspoon of applesauce or yogurt)- lucky for me my son didn't give me a hard time. good luck-

SJB Mom, you son sounds just like mine.  We started him on 10 mg of Medidate - no difference, went to 20 mg - no difference, increased it to 30 mg and he was a different kid.  He was able to control his impulses.  He is 5 and weighed 44 pounds at the time.  We took him off the medication though for the summer because he did not gain any weight in 7 months.  We also sent him to day camp and I couldn't imagine him running around with no food in his stomach all day.  He did wonderfully there off of the medication.  My problem though is now that camp is over (with the structure and running around) he has been out of control with his impulsiveness and hyperactivity.  We started him on Straterra 10 days ago and I am very nervous about him starting kindergarten since it takes a while to kick in.

I am thinking we need to put him back on the Medidate and just accept the fact he will have eating problems for awhile.  Like your son, at dinnertime he would eat all of his meal and eat until bedtime.   He also does not know how to play with other kids.  He will be one of the first ones to join in, but can't go any further with knowing what to properly do.  So he gets silly to make people laugh, and then the potty talk begins sometimes.

Sorry to ramble but I would like to know how you deal with the other parents calling you.  I had a parent call me recently and criticize me for not informing her that my son had ADHD (her son and my son play together all the time at school).  This mother is trouble so I stay away from her.  I basically told her it was none of her business since our sons do not have playdates outside of school.  She has gone to the teachers and told them to keep an eye on my son so he does not do anything to her son (when they were turning 4 my son would be rough sometimes due to his lack of impulse control).  But a year later he has been very well behaved at school and there have been no issues.  I was just curious what you say to these parents besides apologize?

Hi everyone!

one side effect...does anyone else have this one?  He plays with his hair on the top of his head like how a girl would twirl her long hair?  Anyone?

[/QUOTE]

Playing with ones hair can be a comforting device. I did it premeds ( yes I'm on metidate CD 20mg am and another 10 at lunch) but seem to run my fingers through my hair less now...hmmm . I never thought of that...

I know my daughter plays with her hair because she played with mine when she nursed as a baby... brings a smile to my face because I know where that comforting device came from

My daughters softball coach used to run his fingers through his hair when he got angry at a bad play, ( I swear I think he did it so that he wouldnt yell at the girls!! LOL

And I know my dad runs his fingers through his hair when he is watching TV. So Its not a strictly female thing...

Could it possibly be that he is simply comforting himself while he is getting used to a different dosage of meds?  I know it is a bit wierd for me when I change dosages or timing of meds.. I get a strange feeling in my head.. but then it goes away in a week or two.

My 8 yr old stepson is on Metadate ER and Risperdal. We just found out that he has been having seizures at school and that the mother just calls the doctor and tells him she cant handle him and that he is getting out of control. So then the doctor ups his mg's. or how often he takes it. Right now it is morning and night. He was on Clonindine. But he was "weened" off of it within a week. I worry myself to death about him. But hopefully not for long.

We have a courtdate on Tues. and we are going for custody. She has given his medicine to her boyfriend who was hooked on drugs. The cops told us that this medicine is just like cocaine. It does the same thing as cocaine does. He is now deceased. He choked to death on his own vomit. He also mixed liquor with it. She has also sold his pills. To hear her tell it, the child "needed to be on these pills because he was so out of hand and was not paying attention in school". He was going to the bathroom on himself. (Isn't that a sign of sexual abuse). His half sisters stepmom was having to take him clothes due to the fact they never could find the mother, she was was always out with some man having sex.

I do think some people need to have medicine. I do not think he does. He is a smart child. He can tell you the name of the vehicle in front of you, the yr, make, model, everything. I am almost 40 and cant do that. But I am a female. Thats what he tells me. He goes, Lisa, girls dont know cars. But you can drive better than daddy. LOL.

I'll be back on Tues to let everybody if we got him or not.

Hi everyone!

My son is 5 and weighs 48 lbs.  He's been Metadate cd 10mg for 5 months now.  I give it to him with applesauce.  I put applesauce on a teaspoon and then sprinkle all the contents (beads) on the applesauce.  He takes the applesauce WITHOUT chewing the beads because they are time released beads.  Then right after swallowing the applesauce I make him drink a full glass of milk, water, or whatever.  What I'VE NOTICED!  When I gave him  the medicine on a empty stomach he said that his stomach hurt during the day and didn't want to eat.  So now, I give it to him after a good breakfast.  He's usually hungry in the morning. His smallest meal is lunch.  He then eats and ok dinner and is hungry for dessert also.

I'll be back on Tues to let everybody if we got him or not.

Please do stepmomofone and please know that I pray all goes well.
