mountain dew it good but be warned it it not good for you. i personally used it when i want off my meds but weaned myself off of that once i learned how to control my self which i do alright with   i have tried the dt. mtn dew with my 6 year old in the morning to help get him up and going for school.  it helps a little bit at school in the morning, but not for long. it worked for about 2 weeks, and then it was like it stopped working.  so he occasionally gets some on the weekend, but not all the time.  when we were giving it to him before school, it was a very small amount, maybe a 1/4 of a can.

Paul .. you said what I was thinking.   But I didn't speak up.  My friends used to call me the food nazi and I was worried that my take on the whole soft drink thing was a little extreme.  But I was thinking it :)

I am also called a "food nazi" in my home. I NEVER allowed soda, but I tried the MT. Dew and Red Bull. They were both diet, so I am not concerned about the sugar. Anyway, my SD is under weight due to her meds.

The caffeine works in the same way that stimulants do. I think many of us are waying the pros and cons of each method that we try. We arae all just trying to find what works best with the fewest side effects for our children.

Okay from one food nazi to another .. once you got past your aversion to the idea of soda .. did it work?  and for how long?  can it be something that works during the school day?

B/t/w .. Dr. Amen reccomends the use of a caffeine protien drink on the attend web page.  He says that ADD/ADHD'ers are sluggish in the morning and a little bit of caffeine can get them going.  So the concept is not unprecedented.

One thing I have learned on this board is that I am not the only one who expereiences the frustration of side effects from the meds.  I was desperate when I came here.  I can totally understand why the idea of supplementing with Mt. Dew is more appealing than using a stimulant that causes wiehgt issues or tics or anger issues .. etc.

I tried it for a few weeks. She was eating much more, but I didn't see major improvements in her behavior compared to her meds. She even asked to go back to the meds because she thought they helped her more.

Just to add, I did not use any vitamin supplements. I thnk many of the parents using the soda method are supplementing. I know the "Attentive Child" from GNC is a popular choice. So, I am not sure if the combination of these would work better. It may be something to ask about on the "Alternative Board". HTH

I tried cutting sugar from my son's diet. It didn't seem to make one bit of difference for him.

Sugar, Caffine, Ritalin, Strattera....all are some kind of drug with positives and negatives.  The results of course are different on each individual so what works for one does not necessarily work for another.  But what I do know is that adolecent and adult diabietes is on the rise and research is showing that the growing consumption of sugar in drinks and processed foods is having an impact.

I guess the real question is, do I go with meds that are developed and tested (well as tested as they can be) or do I ease my conscience and pump my child with a caffinated/sugar....which also have their consequences.  Have you felt what its like to come down from a sugar high?  By the way, the serving size for all of those drinks is quantified for an adult.  Even though a Red Bull is in a small can, don't be fulled by its size, the contents are still measured for an adult not a child.

I'm not making a judgement one way or the other, but please be aware that all options may have their consequences. Now is that heavy or is that heavy?

Paul

I think it would too, just haven't seen it in the stores around here for a few years now.My sons dr suggested no sugar? this was before my husband and i tried med.  Now i am really confused.  I am really new at this and have just recently found this site.  My sons been on adderall for 4 months.   Green tea in the morning works great--as well as reg. tea--for those who don't want their kids to have to much sugar.   I read in my husband's Men's Health mag. that Red Bull should not be drank very often because the Asorbic Acid was very bad on teeth.  My son likes Mountain Dew--and I give it to him about three times a week--but I still prefer him to have tea.I tried Mt Dew also for my son this summer as I tried to get him off his 18 mg concerta, but it really didn't help much.  My concern with the soda though is that like other sodas, they can deplete the body of much needed calcium and other minerals needed for their growth.  I read a lot about how sodas make the body more acidic, and we need to keep our bodies more alkaline for good health.  What's everyone's thoughts on this?  So i was thinking about this mt. dew thing, which does help my son have an easier time while off the meds. But has anyone tried jolt? This is supposed to have major caffeine in it, i was just wondering if it worked.Red Bull is another great option. We had mild results with it, but stuck with the meds.Yes, it can be true for some people. It is the caffine that can help relax them, same goes for coffee.well then is there any reason they say just mt. dew... why not pepsi or anything else.... sorry just sounded weird when she told me.... had to ask the pros (you all) about this oneI like mt.dew beter then pepsiMountain Dew is chock full of caffeine and sugar which are both stimulants and they can help to add a little extra control for a child....  My cousin went off his meds a couple years ago and uses cafeine as his method of self medicating and it really does help a lot for him....
