Neuropsychological Evaluation=too much$$$ | ADHD Information

Share

So I went to the psychiatrist today.  She thinks I may have add....I am sure that I do, but she wants to send me to have a neuropsych evaluation, but unfortunately I don't have insurance so the evaluation is just too expensive.  Do you think I should mention this to her and see if she gives me normal self reporting tests, or should I find someone else?  Any names/#s of docs, who do normal questionaire diagnosis in nyc

thanks

I'd mention that cost is an issue to you.  many times they assume "cost is no object damn the torpedoes!" and there you go.

It's always good to have the best tests you can afford.  The verbal tests if given by someone versed in ADHD can be just fine.  You may want to make sure though you've had blood workup as well - as it's inexpensive relatively speaking and gets the thought of thyroid and blood sugar, etc. out of the way.  It's your call in the end.

It does come down to your gut feelings.  You've most likely done like all of us and scoured the net, talked to lots of people and worked out the best you can what you can gather about your problems.

I just wish you guys could all have my medical plan.  I work for frito lay canada - and between the cheap canadian .. er inexpensive there IS a diff. hehehe ok inexpensive tests and procedures and my extended work plan the only test I haven't been able to get is where raquel welch gets tiny in a sub and heads for my neurocortex.  Uh, too dated?? LOL

Well get what you can with what you can for sure.

I'm pleasantly surprised that any psych south of the canadian border is willing to go the extra mile for you and not just write out the 3 part script for the pills he is best experienced with.  That's very promising!

I'll be interested in hearing your progress.  Keep your chin up!

That is the exact same problem I am having, but in a different state.  I went to the dr. last week for what I thought was going to be questionaire and maybe some back ground info, but what i got was complete physical and after the results of blood work and chest x-rays, he is going to bring in his staff psychologist for testing. Well I am worried that my insurance isn't even going to pay for the physical.  I know people that have been diagnosised without being tested or whether they were medicated with out all that psych testing and they are doing wonderful. I am not sure if I am going to go for the consult or just try and find another doctor. I guess the work up is good just in case there is a medical problem,I just was not expecting it. This is probably not much help, but just thought I would let you know that there are others dealing with simialr issues. Getting my daughter diagnosised was much easier that is why I have put all this off for many years.

Definitely tell him of your financial concerns. There may be programs out there which could help you with the expense. You are certainly not the only patient he has seen who has to worry about costs. If you don't tell him though, he has no way of knowing.

If he can't help you, see if he can refer you to the nearest school or teaching hospital which deals with neuropsych evals. They may have a student who needs to do supervised testing as part of the curriculum and can use you as the subject. Since it is supervised, you will still get a good eval and the cost should be lower.

YES!! Thank you barb I completely forgot those options!!! where was my head?? Oh up my butt apparently LOL.  But I digress.  Yes - there is a lot of lower cost but high value tools for the person of modest income like you or I to take advantage of.

I don't remember a bit if I mentioned my favorite cost saver - group therapy?  It's typically a wee fraction of the cost per hour of one-on-one.  It's a lot like here only a lot more talking and nearly no typing so you don't get carpal tunnel (extra bonus there).  Also, the others in the group may give you extra support that one solo psycholgist or psychotherapist cannot give during a short time they have you in their care per week!

Good one again barb!  Awesome .

This is all strange.  I went to a psy. and just did a 15 min evaluation and we tried Adderall and it worked so now I'm on that.  You should just try a different psy.
