Switching from Ritalin SA to Concerta | ADHD Information
I learned something new today! Concerta is actually Ritalin and is avalible in my Country! I have talked to the doctors about starting my son on it in September and I am wondering if anyone has made this transition and how it went?
IF you have any info on this med I would love to know about it!

Thankyou so much!! I think I am going to give it a try and see how it goes. The Ritalin seems to be a bit of an issue because he has to take it twice a day. With the Concerta he can take it once and forget about it:)

Concerta is just a long-acting form of methylphenidate (as previously mentioned, it has the same active ingredient as ritalin). It uses what is called the "oros system" for delivering the meds. Basically, there are 3 compartments in the pill which release the meds at different time intervals throughout the day as the pill dissolves. Side effects for ritalin and concerta should be fairly similar; however, as mentioned above, there have been some recent studies about some possible additional side effects with concertamy son has been on ritalin 5mg 2 times a day and just within the past month doc put him on an additonal 5 mg. it still seems after 4:30 he reverts back to misbehaving and not listening. I didn't know Concerta was RItalin and my son was on Concerta 18mg for the last half of 2nd grade and all of third grade (upped to 27mg at end of 3rd). He's off meds for the summer and wants to start 4th grade with no meds. WE're going to try it. He already is an anxious, nervous, very, very self-conscious kid and I think Concerta made it worse--yet COncerta made him less irritable and cranky than Adderall for sure...
Anyone know of the best stimulants that don't make anxiety worse? I am praying he can do ok in school and not need the stims. We're seeing a psychol. though he adamantly hates to go to any doc, and I'm hoping therapy will help...

Cindy is correct. Concerta is a long-acting form of methylphenidate (the active ingredient in Ritalin).
I, personally don't care for the Concerta. It just didn't do it for me. It made me tired and "abnormal," for lack of better wording. Some people really like Concerta though, so it could be a good option for your son.
I do believe that there have been recent studies on Concerta causing more depression and a few other side effects, so that may be something you want to look into.

I just found out yesterday that Concerta was Ritalin too. I never wanted Tiff on Ritalin and come to find out that she has been. Her psychiatrist had to up her dosage to 27mg. The 15mg wasn't truly helping her. She has had signs of depression which was mentioned above. So I am too looking into if this is the best medication for her.
