My son, 9 yrs old was switched from Concerta to Adderall XR last week. He had hives almost immediately after taking his first dosage of Adderall XR. My son does have other allergies and I'm trying to make sure it's the Adderall and not something else.
Has anyone else experienced this reaction? I'm having a hard time finding out info on this.
Please help!!
Allergic reactions to dexedrine salts are rare but happen. The only way you could have been sure would be to have taken your son directly to ER room and they could have judged it. Always best to be on the safe side and take away what you know is new to him.
Concerta will probably be fine IF the Adderal was the problem - they are different meds so that's good.
Some people with ADHD get hives due to stress and excitement - me on rare occasions even now. Was he feeling anxious or overly hyper?
Other thing you can check is the poison control center if it occurs a second time. Some people get hypersensitive at times to all sorts of things. Just watch I guess.
If you ever want to try a second time on adderal or dexedrine I'd suggest quick release variety as they flush right out in a couple of hours. If he got hives then you could just discontinue.
Good luck!
