How do I know???My 7 yr old son is in the process of being diagnosed with adhd. The more I have read and with all the research I have done...I am almost positive that I am adhd. I had all the symptoms as a child. I now suffer from depression and have alot of the adult sysptoms. So, how does one go about getting diagnosed as an adult. The Dr. has told me there is a good chance that I am if my son has it. I do take meds for the depression so would the meds for adhd be the same??? Does anyone else find this type of situation to be extremely frustrating???? Thanks for all the advice and answers ... Hi DCKmom, They have simple online questionaires that you can answer. Here's a link to one http://www.amenclinic.com/ac/addtests/adult.asp However, I don't think it's necessary to "pass" or "fail" a test to determine if you have adult ADD. If you're like most of us, when you look at a list of symptoms,(or characteristics as I like to call them) such as these, http://www.akrongeneral.org/add/add3.html you WILL KNOW almost IMMEDIATELY if this is you or not. I think that it's possible for many people to share a few of these characteristics, however if you are an adult with ADD, this list may as well be a portrait of yourself. In the list of "symptoms" on the akrongeneral.org website, 80% of those characteristics match me to a tee. Also, if you are reading some of these postings, you will likely find an uncanny familiarity to what is being discussed. -JA I did a survey form like this also. I saw a couple of Psychologists and both said ADD. I was still abit skeptical. Then I saw an article in US News and World Reort a month or two ago. It had interviews with several ADD couples. I could have sworn the writer had been to our house interviewing us! So i hit the library and took out every book I could find on Adult ADD. I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever now. It is just like reading the postings here. I keep seeing the same old stories (they are my same old stories also).
Hi ja-add2004
thanks so much for posting those web sites. I'm just finding out more about ADD and had no idea it existed until a friend in the know who has ADD recognised some major similarities in us. So thought I would take a look. It's very scarey the realisation and relief that has started to creep over me that I'm not alone and that I am not stupid or incompetent, just different from the majority. My friend is helping me realise that it is fine to be different. It feels good that the intense-struggle to fit in can now stop.
So thank you for your view on it all. THanks for the website, I hadn't seen that list of symptoms in my research. 21 out of 27 - one more confirmation! |
