Adderall and tics?? | ADHD Information

My son developed an eye tic on stimulants like ADDERALL and CONCERTA too.  We tried Strattera since it's a non-stimulant but it didn't help.  Now we're going to try Concerta with Clonidine.  Clonidine is to treat the tic so he can continue to benefit from the Concerta for his adhd.  I hope it works and I hope you find what works for you.  I do know I wish I would have tried this years ago instead of avoiding the stimulant all these years and losing valuable time.I have a 10 year old son, who has been on Adderall for about 7 months now,  It has worked great, except recently I have noticed that he has a neck tic.  This has been going on for a few weeks now, I thought maybe this would go away.  Has anyone else experienced this in their children?  I also have a 4 year old on Adderall as well, so should I be concerned?

i have a grandaughter that has adhd, bipolar, and tourettes...when she started having her tics,,she was on retalin,,,so we took her off,,because stimulate will make them get worse,,,,she is now on clonidine, lamicatal, benndryl, and lithium,,,,she still has the tics,,,but way low of what they were,,,,i would cry when i saw her doing them,,and so would she,,,,grandma are they going to stop,,,i can't stop,,,they hurt,,,kids are making fun of me,,,,when ever your child is having tics from meds,,,please take them off and try something else,,,she is ten now,,,and doing real good

Just to throw this out there: my DS (7) was diagnosed with ADHD in 1st grade. He had developed a tic of wiping his mouth & face BEFORE we ever started meds. He is pretty "normal" (ha!) off meds, just hyper and can't concentrate and was struggling in school, esp with behavior. Once he started Ritalin, the tics STOPPED.

BUT. He took a summer holiday from meds, started them with school this year and lo and behold, here is the tic again! I think the tic is anxiety-related rather than caused by the meds. Obviously, he had the tic before a single med last year.

Who knows! I've just read that you should ignore the tic, try to solve the anxiety and hopefully the tic will go away on its own.

Good luck.

You may want to discuss with the doctor about the need to be on medication through homework time.  That may require a higher dose of the med or a second 10 mg in the early afternoon.

My son has been on AdderallXR for 3 years and it has worked wonderfully up until now (5th grade) so we need to explore something different.  He need the med increased as he grew - about once a year.  Good luck.
