Hello All,
I am new to the site and eager to contribute to the pool of knowledge. I just started taking 100 mg /a.m Provigil for ADD as I am intolerant of stimulants. I definitely have had more energy to accomplish tasks throughout the day w/o that "speedy" feeling one gets from Ritalin. However, I am having problems gauging its effectiveness on focus. Any similar experiences? Different?
Hi,
I'm glad you posted. I am 37 & was diagnosed in late May w/ADHD & severe general anxiety disorder. Since, June I've tried generic Adderall in different dosages & then in July started to try brand name Adderall in different dosages also. I went from 10mg-20mg/2x a day of the short acting. Because I didnt feel the Adderall was working. I was awake (drinking less coffee) but still late for appts & etc.
Well, I started the 20mg/2x a day at work (I am a nurse in a hospital) on Sat & Sun I felt like I was going to crawl out of my skin by the time the afternoon dosage wore off (about 5). I started to eat the skin around my fingers more & couldn't keep my hands still.
But I dont know if I was having a reaction because of work, I'm under extra stress at home or because of the monthly girl thing.
Anyway, I called my Dr yest (Mon) & she told me to stay off the Adderall & come see her next mon & she was going to try me on Provigil. She said that I couldn't try the other stimulants like Ritalin or Concerta because it would do the same thing as the Adderall. On the Adderall I can stay on 1 subject talking but I still am doing 3 things at once. It seems like the Adderall increases my anxiety.
Like you, I get the speedy feeling on Adderall. I am scared to death to take the Provigil next Mon. I did some research yesterday & read that it was used for Narcolepsy. I'm scared to try a different med especially since I haven't read much about its effectiveness with ADHD.
Please keep me posted on your experience with Provigil since I know I need a med to help along with the counseling I'm getting. I know different meds work differently with different people. I'm glad to find someone with the same experience with the other meds.
Thanks,
Scared to death of taking Provigil.
Dear Scared to Death,
My Dx prescribed the standard dose of 100mg to start with, but I decided to break the tablet in 1/2 and start with that. The only adverse effect I've had is nausea (the 1st med I've experienced nausea on). If you've read a bit about it, it has mixed reviews about its efficacy. However, I am willing to try it as I have run the gamut of most other stimulants with intolerable SE. Though I am not a doctor, I would not be scared to take the Provigil as I have recently read that the manufacturer Cephalon is seeking approval from the FDA to market Provigil in a different dosage as an ADHD alternative called Attenace (sp?). FYI, avoid alcohol, citrus and caffeine around dosing time as it is rumored to decrease its effectiveness. Hope this helps! I'll let you know if I experience anything differently as I increase the dosage.
Sincerly,
X-peri-mental
