Has anyone picked up Hallowell's new book, Delivered From Distraction? I just picked it up last night - I think it looks like it has alot of great information. I was cracking up reading it last night when Hallowell was saying that it is ok to read just 2/3rds of the book - that this is very ADD! And it's great if you just jump around the chapters reading. Autumnstar It is here at the house...the GF is reading it...she bought it...I have yet to look at it....maybe when she is done with it... She listened to an earlier version on CD...she liked it...thought it helped her to understand me better... I was able to read more of it yesterday. I really like this book. I hope I can read all of it. Chapter 4 - the self-assessment quiz was hysterical. This is the best book I have read about ADD! It is written it a way that is very easy for a person with ADD to read. I got so much out of this book. It helped me understand myself and my son even better. I agree. I finally finished the book and the book is worth it's weight in gold! Very positive and supportive. Rather than beating us down with "you can't do this, you can't do that" it helps to build you up and helps you feel great about having ADD. So, please, humor the rest of us & at least tell me--should I have DRIVEN to Distraction memorized before approaching DELIVERED from Distraction?Sorry I didn't reply before now - I had a horrible sinus infection and I'm back on the computer today. No you don't have to memorize the first one to read the second one. Actually the second one can be read without having read the first one. Some information is the same but they have alot of great new info in the second book. And most of the chapters are short (for us ADDers) and you can skip around reading if you want. I've started to read the book "Driven to Distraction"and found the case studies at least similar to my own past experiences. The bosses i've worked for in the past can be dolts at times (Jim). Thankfully, the foremen I currently work for seem to understand that "while everyone else thinks left to right,,, I tend to work right to left". I generally figure out the problems presented at work faster than the ordinary people. the book (so far)is easier to read than most "technical"books as it has been written in first person, past history. When I finish this book, I believe there are some co-workers who might benefit by borrowing it ( I won't hold it against them if they lose or misplace it as long as they read it first daniel Daniel, I enjoyed Delivered more than Driven. I felt it was more informative and easier for me to read - or skip around and read. There was also some case histories that fit me more when I was growing up.I have read about half of "Delivered From Distraction". I heartily recommend it.It contains a lot of new information and is very well presented. However, I would not give up on "Driven to Distraction" just yet as it is still a great book. I really can't say why but I liked the assessment quiz in "Driven to Distraction" better. It may only be for the silly reason that I liked the even 100 questions in the prior book while the newer book has 128. At about question 80, in typical ADD fashion, I had enough of them. This book spends a lot of time to convince people with ADD that it is not a bad thing but can have great advantages. It talks about the importance of identifying talents and strengths, developing them and making the most of your ADD tendencies. One chapter "The Skinny on ADD: Read This If You Can't Read The Whole Book" gives an overview of most of the important points converted in greater detail in the rest of the book. Some of the topics covered in that chapter are: - What is ADD? - The Difference Between ADD and ADHD - Core symptoms of ADD - Advantageous ADD characteristics - Disadvantageous ADD characteristics - What causes ADD? - What is the proper procedure to diagnose ADD? - Who should I see to get a diagnosis? - What other problems should one lookout for? - What is the best treatment for ADD? - What are the most important lifestyle changes needed? - What other non medical therapies help? - What are the dangers of stimulant medications? - What are the alternatives to stimulant medications? Best wishes, VicI can't get past the case histories in the very beginning of the first chapter of Driven. (Second attempt at this book) I assume the "If You Can't Get Thru The Whole Book" Chapter is in Delivered, right?I'm reading Driven but will look for Delivered. I have the largest library of partially and unread books. Also, Answers to Distraction is exceptionally helpful--a much "friendlier" read, in my opinion. Same author(s), I believe--Hallowell & Ratey. Bump upauntie, please have mercy--what does that mean? Are you holding a Royal Flush?List the alternatives please. Adhd is with hyper behavior isn't it and add is not hyper issue. He says in the Book that he uses ADD because it is more understood by the public in general. I would recomend the book, i am listening to it on tape and so far i have learned more about ADD and more about myself. He explains that medication is only part of the solution and gives alot of self-help ideas. I think it has helped me get more out of life and medication. Great read or listen, if you are like me. I just got this book from the library. I love it so far. I got it to help my son, but am learning alot about why my husband is the way he is! |
