sorry kind of gross question | ADHD Information

I got IBS according to doc because of the frequent use of my dexedrine.  It started as cramping on my sides - which I attributed to a small hernia I've had for a long time.  The doc was unconvinced and put me on Zelnorm (which gave me raging diarrheah!), then switched to the milder and in my opinion better dicetel.  It stopped the cramping and constipation but the only side effect is a little gas.  It's so safe there is no warnings for any interactions or overdose!  It says they gave 1200 percent more than normal dose to a lab tester and all they got was "raging flatulence"!  I got a wicked picture off that one - a lab rat farting itself across the room! LOL

I'm beginning to see a lot of people complain of intestinal problems - both with the amphetamines and strattera.  I at first thought my problem was that the amphetamines are affecting the smooth muscle actions in my body - but when I heard that strattera causes them - maybe there's some other mechanism involved?  I'm going to be watching it carefully for sure.

Thank you for the reply-----usaully coffee in the morning does the trick for me---but I have cut back this week ----I have only been drinking one cup instead of three-----heard coffee can be a problem with the med

I have had constipation problems most of my life.  Whats worked best so far, for me...and this came from my DR...is Milk of Magnesia 2 TBSP, and 100% Natural Psyllium fiber laxative.  I take capsules.  Take daily as needed.

You need to pay attention to how the meds effect your body...I had never been one to do this ...I now believe that being on meds that gave me constipation...contributed to my having to have 2 intestinal operations.

I was diagnosed with depression, and have been on meds for depression for about 20 yrs.  I was just diagnosed ADHD Jan, 05.

Hope this helps!

LTC1....It's interesting that you had serious intestinal problems as a result of taking meds. I have had this happen as well; although the doctors disregarded my theory, I was convinced that if I hadn't taken effexor and then permax on top of that (poorly supervised) I wouldn't have developed the symptoms of Crohns disease.

I too was being medicated for depression, but at that time my psychologist was recommending meds which my ob/gyn then prescribed. Neither knew much about side effects or med management and it wasn't until I did my own research that I found that both are anticholinergic and inhibit peristalsis. Nor did anyone tell me that I was supposed to increase gradually to the therapeutic dose of effexor (225mg) and not begin at that dosage!

I was one sick puppy for months....with symptoms too gross to mention here. I'd like to hear what happened to cause you 2 intestinal surgeries...so please reply.

The moral of this story?
