new to adderall xr and depression | ADHD Information

Hi, I am a 22 year old girl who recently saw a doctor and was diagnosed with ADHD. I started off taking 10 mg of Adderall and was to report to the doctor how i felt. I felt good, but like it was wearing off fast so I went back and was presecribed 20 mg of Adderall XR daily and told to combine it with a 10 mg blue pill, the other Adderall i started off with. I was also using 100 mg Zoloft and was feeling very depressed during the day. I told my doctor and she switched me to Celexa, instead of Zoloft. So now, I am weening myself off the Zoloft (50 mg for one week), taking 10 mg of Celexa, 20 mg of Adderall XR and 10 mg of Adderall (blue pills) now. I was wondering if anyone else felt depression or irritability when taking Adderal XR and an anti depressant liek Zoloft or Celexa. I felt very unhappy and didnt want to do anything. Will this wear off? Will the Celexa interact better with the Adderall XR? And also, can i take the short acting blue pills maybe more times a day than taking the Adderal XR at all because I really started feeling crummy when I started the Adderall XR. I am very confused with everything, and my doctor is very hard to talk to and seems to just prescribe me things and rush me out of her office. I am away at school so my choices for doctors is slim, and I was wondering if anyoen could help me. Thank You :)

I can't say that I was depressed, anxious, or nervous when I first started taking the adderall xr, sorry. It's possible that you would lessen/eliminate these side effects if you lowered the dose. Although, it's also possible that adderall just isn't the right drug for ya.

As far as finding new drs, that can be a pain...if you have insurance, definitely figure out what/where you're covered first. If you can't find a better dr. that is in your plan, then perhaps you can get a referral. Do you know anybody else who has AD/HD and goes to a good dr? Perhaps you can try their clinic/physician.

deang008- Thank you so much for responding...

I am definately going to start keeping a log... It's hard enough to have ADHD, and even more hard when you have it to try and be patient! I stopped taking the Adderall XR because it made me feel waay to weird... yes more focused, but not worth it for the side effects... I felt depressed and anxious and nervous... it was kind of scary actually. Did you feel any of that at first, or not at all?? Thank You!!!

I hated Adderall, my son took it; weird side effects and mood swings, needless to say we took him off and now he's on strattera. Really? I have heard that strattera is better... how old is your son if you dont mind me asking. Thanks for responding :)

Definitely demand time/explanations from your doctor or find a new one....even if they're hard to find. Getting the right meds/doses can be difficult, so it's important to have good communication between patient and doctor. Also, try keeping a log of what meds you take on which days and the time taken....in addition to the effects they have (good and bad/side effects).

I personally take adderall and adderall xr and find that they work well for me. Every person reacts differently to different meds, though.

Best of luck to ya and keep us posted!

The first psychiatrist we had was like that, our appt was about 15 minutes, he just wrote up a new prescription or changed the meds and that was it.  When we moved and switched to a new doctor, I couldn't believe the differences.  Our appts are always an hour even if we don't 'need that much time and she is EXCELLENT, advises counseling in addition to the meds, she really listens, weighs my sons at every visits, checks their blood pressure each time, sends me info through emails or mails about new things she's reading or recommends.  My son is very active and she helped me find a skateboard park since she knew he loved skateboarding.  A good doctor can help just as much as the right meds, try a new doctor that can give you what you need :)

4kids4us- Thank you soooo much for responding... it made my day actually  Reading it gave me a lot of hope! Where did you find your new doctor? I really dont know how to go about finding a new one. Maybe I will try asking my primary care doctor if she knows of anyone. Anyways, thank you again and Im happy for you and your family :)

Hey Soifa5427!

When we moved there weren't any psychiatrists in the area under our insurance provider list within 30 miles so I searched online for psychiatrists in the area and found her.  She was actually the only one that popped up and I asked my kids pediatrician and she had heard great things about her.

Another resource is go to www.chadd.org I believe they list doctors who are specialized with treating patients with add/adhd there, I wish I had known that before.

Where are you?  I can help you search.
