Concerta

My son Cameron who is almost 7 is on Concerta 27mg and I feel that it should be adjusted before school.  I tried to make an appt with his doc and the medical assistant told me to wait...has this happened to anyone before?

What reason did the doctor's office give for having you wait?

It might be because the doctor is interested in keeping your son on the lowest possible dose of Concerta that will work.  The doctor may want you to see how your son does at school and then make adjustments if your son encounters difficulties at school.  In other words, he may want your son to test-drive this dose of Concerta in his new classroom.  Frankly, it sounds pretty reasonable and responsible to me.

They gave me no reason and she didn't even check with the doctor.

I would call the medical assistant back and ask why you need to wait.  If you're not satisfied with the answer, I would leave a message for the doctor to call you back and ask him why you need to wait to make an appointment.  Is your son having any difficulties on the current dose of Concerta?

Just so you know, a year ago my 12-year-old son (dx ADHD and anxiety) was on 27 mg Concerta and I suspected he needed an increase (based on what I had seen at the end of the previous school year, not what I was seeing during the summer).  But I did wait and had him experience two weeks of 6th grade before calling our ped and asking for an increase.  BTW, the increase to 36 mg Concerta did not solve the problem.  It turned out my son's new school caused his anxiety to skyrocket and no amount of Concerta was going to help that (in fact, quite the opposite, more Concerta can make anxiety worse).
