Dosage | ADHD Information

My son is also prone to tics (he has tourette syndrom which is right now in a wayning cycle). Maybe that is why the dr. is being extra cautious. I just feel like if I have finally (and I mean finally) made this choice that I want it to work. I want my son to see a difference too so that he is more apt to take the medication.

Thank you all for your help, you have made some comments that I will now follow or look into. I love the advice about documenting everything and especially the information on do's and don't's while on meds ie. coffee & citurs. Should that not have been something the dr. told me to look into?

Anyway, I'm off to research that stuff right now and get a journal too.

I have the pills but I am working all week this week so I will not try them on my son until next week when I am on "holidaze"

Look for that meds dosage chart online it should be of help also. I also reccomend all these meds used on ful stomachs to avoid no eating. Make sure using supplements also as we all defecinceys even with healthy eating. Protein drinks have lots of nutrition. Ovaltine also ,Kids require more nutrition than most adults cause they are more active than us. Don't give caffeine or citrus at same time as meds lessons absorbtion rates.

I guess it would have helped if I would have said what the Rx was. It is dexadrine.

It just seemed to me like 2.5 was a very small dose and I wasn't sure if that is how they started and then climbed up from therer (if necesary).

My son is 9 but very slight, so I'm guessing the dr. is taking that into account. The thing that really made me wonder is that when I went to get the Rx filled, the pharmasist said he had to order it in as his smallest tablet was a 5 mg.

My son was prescribed 10 mg of dexostrat--in the beginning, by the end of the first year or so he was up to 40mg. Then he "out grew" that dosage and the dr had to switch him to something else. Most ADHD med's have what is called a tolerance level and once a child's body tolerates a certain level of the ADHD med, the dr. has to do one of two things, switch the med or prescribe a higher dosage. Hope that helps. busybear38573.4703703704

Can I get some common first dosages for a child being perscribed stimulants for ADHD?

My dr. has started my son out w/ 2.5mg. Is that common as a first dose?

I agree. What's your son's mass? They have to prescribe based on severity of presentation, and in mg/kg of mass. Dex is also a light weight stim, kind of in the middle of the pack. Maybe only one lower "Focalyn, which is dextromethylphenidate. So either Dalk is being supercautious, or is dx'g sonny as not severly ADD or ADHD. You de Momma, so you pay Dalk, and if you think it's not working, go tell him. Document your observations as to frequencey (date, time, food, school, etc.). Sleep habits are important. Eating hapits, too. Loss of apetite? or Not? Carbo Cravings?

Good luck

Hi Marci.....the common start out dose for ritilan is 5 mil's. 5 mils is a very low dose and while some children respond positively to such a low dose, many have to have the dose increased. I guess your childs doctor is being extremely conservative and feels if it doesnt work, it doesnt do any and he can always increase it.
