Are you compulsively distracted? | ADHD Information

Dave:
I also feel the need to compulsively focus on one thing at the expense of anything else. I become so engrossed that any kind of distraction is almost painful. If I lose a groove, it's gone permanently. It takes lots of effort to get into a compulsive groove, but once it's there, no matter how counterproductive and repetitive it is, no matter how many REAL responsibilities there are, I am driven to prolong it.

Are you a "multitasker"? I find that when I multitask, everything is just half assed. I can't multitask. Obsession or skittish flitting.

I am so obsessive...I have  my drawers organized..my socks are colored corrdinated,  my sports socks are with sports socks, work with work, my towels are folded a certain way. my closet is the same way...the blue shirts with the blue..and so on...this has helped me stayed organized in a huge way...i keep things in certain places...like my keys..etc...everything has it special place...my friends tell me I like the guy in as good as it gets...

I'm not sure about others, but I find I become compulsive about things like reading the forums, or maybe a computer game, or getting something done.

I wonder if its an ADD trait, or do we tend to be OCD and ADD, or maybe its just me who can't seem to put the forums down. YEs I do get distracted allot, but..I also have huge urges to do things that overpower sometimes things I should be doing.

I wonder if its because its easier to do one thing for us, then switch back and forth, because compulsion, if you think about it is doing one thing allot.  you would think it would be the other way arround, that we could not become compulsive because our minds wander,.. Alas..

I'm very much obsessive compolsive.....I have to be very careful about what I get involved in.......I've often wondered why can't I get OCD about keeping things clean.........Hmmm.... I strongly dislike cleaning...so there lies the reason.

When I try to multi task bad things happen....If you like charcoaled food just ask for a meal that involves more than two pans on the stove.
I am so obsessive...I have  my drawers organized........everything has it special place...my friends tell me I'm like the guy in as good as it gets...
If only I could obsess about something productive! Lucky lambie.....

But alas...yes, I tend to obsessively focus on the thing I find most interesting at the time. On another forum, someone asked if she was the only one who has a compulsion to research the topic-of-the-day exhaustively.....and that's me.

The internet really feeds this....and it's a tough one because it's sitting there on my desk at work, lingering there at my fingertip along with other things I should be doing instead. How can I resist? I can't! And that is acutally what sent me to the doctor to ask if I might have ADD. It defies all my logic....to have a deadline looming, and still spend too much time online.

Right now, ADD is my topic-of-the-day. A month or so ago it was the concept of soulmates or twin souls. Before that it was Buddhism and meditation.

joyous, I tend to do the same thing...I get really obsessived at the thing I find interesting at that moment...I will get so stuck on certain things...I am obessive with the gym...have to go at certain times and if I don't it throws me off...I get stuck on things...something taste...all of a sudden, I find myself eating it everyday...it's all good..I hope.... I have the same trait: I keep things in exactly the same places and always do things in exactly the same order, to avoid forgetting. Whenever I ease off a bit, I immediately do something dumb like forget to lock the house up!

As for multitasking: for me it's doing two things slowly!

Driven to Distraction is very good, but his new book, "Delivered from Distraction" is un- be- leav- able .  It goes WAY beyond "driven" as far as being more indepth and just down to earth in explaining what causes a lot of ADD thinking and action.

Of course it would help if I could just find it. It's been missing for 6-7 days now.    I know it will show up in some really weird place I put it so I could find it later{like that's never happened before!}
Hey Dtsjor,  I guess I am pretty bad...my friends are always threatening to come over here, mess up my drawers, dirty my floors and re arrange my closet...I was freakin...like you, my floors are clean enough to eat off of..however, I wouldn't...my brother in law said he has never seen a person's toliet so clean..he was amazed to see how clean it was when he pick up the toliet seat...
Lambiekin,

My best friend came over to my house for my annual New Years Eve party & messed up my daughter's room on purpose. After she saw me FREAK OUT she never did that again. Now, I when my 8 & 16 yr old girls have a messy room, I just shut the door. My room is a different story. I hate a bed that is unmade or dishes not put in the dishwasher & then cleaned.

But I'm not as bad as my best friend who is Bi-Polar. When we go traveling to different cities for softball she brings her own sheets to the hotels & calls maid service to vacuum the room in front of her and she cleans the room herself. I'm not that extreme in hotels.

hey dstjor

me too, I can nto leave without making my bed..even if I am in a rush, I still have to make the bed before I head out...I am not as bad as your friend with the hotels..but I do ask to see the room before I take it...I have to undo the bed a little bit...I need to make sure there are no creepy crawlers or other peoples hairs lurking on the sheets, pillows and or blankets...I also can't walk around bare foot..have to have shoes in unknown territory..oh my word, I sound like a freak...

My family and close friends are constantly teasing me about being OCD and 'too organized'. I think that a little bit of OCD comes naturally with ADD/ADHD but I also think that a lot of it comes from ourselves. We know we can't concentrate and focus and because of that when we find something that we take an interest to we tend to over compensate for our condition. It can be frusterating but it feels like it's out of my control sometimes, I don't relaize I'm doing it until it's already done, know what I mean? I've noticed that it's gotten increasingly worse since I started on my Adderall XR, has anyone else seen this problem?

too funny...yes, I am a woman...aka..lambiekin

Found this forum because I was tried to figure why I get so obsessed on my 'topic of the moment'. Thought I had OCD for awhile, two of my sisters do and my friend, they thought I did too but in reasearching OCD seems a different kind of an obession then on a topic, it's for anxiety, fear of somthing happening and obbessing about it.

Lol, ADHD is my current topic too. My topic will be all I can think about and the internet is great, I can only find like a page if anything in my books, and it don't quench it. Hmmm so many books I've brought when I've been interested in somthing and never actually read (except for the perticular page of interest.) A topic continues untill it gets replaceby the new one. My thinking doesn't seem 'complete' unless I'm thinking about my subject, but then it's boring thinking of the same thing and SOOOO frustrating not getting anything done!!!!

When I get an idea I just have this utter driving urge to do it straight away, if I don't I can't think of anyting else.

Upper guns and the lower battery. I wonder why they named it the poop deck? Better go charge up, so I can stay up later...  yeah i totally get that too.... except for it never seems like i can
get stuck on something long enough to make anything out of it!
it's so funny because i feel like i could have written your post
Joyous56! heh

Totally, me too.

I could stay on the computer all day and night if I had the choice!

I focus on one thing to the exclusion of anything else.  I have some OCD trates and take meds for anxiety (OCD is an anxiety disorder).  But other than that I think it's the hyper-focus thing a lot if not all adhders have.

Lambiekin,

I guess I am the female version of you. Im exactly the same way. Before I was put on Lexapro, I would have panic attacks when things were not their place or if things werent organized the way I wanted them. If my parents were coming to visit I would clean for 2 days straight & then clean 2 days after they left. Mind you my house is never dirty. You can always eat off my wood floors. But I would see dirt that wasnt there. I never went as far as my friend who cleans her walls once a week w/bleach. I drive my family crazy with my organization. But I found out since being diagnosed that I have secret places of disorganization hidden from everyone except me.
Ditto. I've said this before, I bothered to install a lock on my patio door (to allow air in, but keep intruders out), but...I have woken up several times to find I have left my keys in the front door overnight or left my car unlocked in a lot that routinely has several car thefts a year. Maybe they break in and discover that I never have any gas in my car either or they think that because it's unlocked it's a set up of some kind...too easy.  :D
