I have been taking stimulants for over 10 years. Every 18 montsh or so
I'll notice a decrease in effectiveness, but going to a different med
(Adderall, Ritalin, Dexedrine, etc.) takes care of it. They all work for me. I
don't like skipping even one day, so I don't take breaks,Wordwoman38573.9175694444After being on stimulant meds for a few months and realizing so many good things, I really really really do NOT want to develop a tolerance.  I have skipped my daily dose maybe one weekend day every three or so weeks (almost always because I want to sleep more and don’t want to take it too late in the day).

When you guys talk about taking a break from the meds—how long do you stay off them?  Do you think that has an effect on preventing a tolerance?  How long were you on stimulant meds before you noticed a decrease in efficacy?

I see the doc again this week, but he really seems to LOVE the pharmaceutical company, and I’m not convinced he can provide the insight y’all can!  Thanks much!

Thank you WW!  Since I posed that question, my understanding of ‘tolerance’ has change a bit—

The ‘tolerance’ MAY be the result of my body getting more used to drug (physical body not  mental--if that makes sense) which led to decrease in the sort of speedy  and super motivated feeling—to the point that I don’t feel that at all.  As long as 3 months after first starting stimulant medication, I still felt a bit torqued-up.

Maybe the ‘tolerance’ I really fear is if drugs no longer help me prevent silly mistakes, rude behavior and the like.

I’ve lost that speedy/super motivated feeling (not a bad thing—I’ll never understand how anyone could actually LIKE feeling that way ALL the time), and I think that scared me.

Upon reflection, I think I’m gonna pay more attention to the things that are defiantly ADHD related—screw the clean house (it was nice while it lasted)—as long as I pay my bills before service is cutoff and do most of the things ‘responsible’ and civil people do I’m not gonna fret!
