No personal experience with these but here is what my drug guide says of course you may already know these things:
Risperdal: classified as an antipsychotic, works on dopamine and serotonin in the central nervous system, prescribed to decrease symptoms of psychosis, metabolized by the liver mostly. This may cause dizzyness and drowsiness, sometimes photosensitivity is seen, so wear sunscreen in prolonged exposure outside. May cause tremors.
thats a brief discription so please ask your doc what you should know about this medication...
please dont let the above scare you, its looks as though your doctor believes this will have a calming effect on your child without snowing him over, again talk with your doctor about side effects and what the drug is meant to do for your child exactly and what you need to observe and report to him once your child starts the med.
Best of luck to you, the most important thing is that your aware of what your child is taking and you monitor his progress on it. Work with your doc to find a regimen that works for your child. If you feel that something is not right dont be afraid to say so and ask for other alternatives. I hope thats encouraging

what type of issues does your son have? Is he aggressive? My son is just been swithed to aderall and is going to be on 2 doses of risperdal. I will keep you informedMy son used to take metadate and we loved it for a few months untill he started getting depressed and very angry in the evening when it started to wear off. But we have had that experience with every adhd medicine out there. My sons Dr said we have 2 options. Give him something like Risperdal or just keep rotating the meds he takes every few months. My Doctor doesn't want to give him Risperdal if we can help it. Whats great about my sons Dr is he also has adhd and has tried many of the meds my son has, only to see that all the side effects just aren't worth it. Of course he says he is an adult and can just try and handle it without meds but knows a child simply can't. I will probably keep trying different combos of meds rather than give him a strong medication to handle another medications side effectsPlease do not put him on Resperdal without doing some thorough research on this drug (used to treat psychosis). My mother, 83 yrs old, has been on Resperdal for several years. One of the side effects I have learned of are the Parkinson's symptoms that may develop and may not be reversable.
My son was on it for not even a week I stopped it after severe reactions to the med. Each child is different use with caution. Good luck
