Inplusive

[QUOTE=Tater]

I have heard many times that Strattera is great for focus but not so great for hyperactivity or impulsiveness...can't remember which one, but I know those parents had to add a small amount of a stim to help with which ever symptom wasn't being touched by the Strattera.

thank you sooooo much.  I am hoping some one will through a couple of names at me for the best stem.  Before he was on Strattera, he was on adderall.  We have a dr apt next wed.  I am hoping the dr will feel the same way i do.  thanks, tater.  you're may ray of sunshine today.  it's been a bad day for me.  but i am going to bed early, hopefully.

Glad to help.

As for stims....I really don't know what the stim of choice is to use with Strattera.

Did you check the med board?

I have been reading.....and reading....and reading.

my son, 7 turning 8 in nov., is having a problem with controlling his impulsivity .  He is fine in all other areas, but this one.  he is adhd.  he is on strattera, clondine and zaperxia.  I don't know what meds work best with this type of problem.  so, please, any info would help.

i sure hope so.  i asked him what was wrong.  he said he was just excited to be back at school.  I wish I had some advise for you, but htis seems to be the main problem we have with Maddy, especially at school. I think maturity is a big part of it, KWIM. Each year seems to get a little better for us.

Ogram,

Impulsivity is my son's major issue with behavior.  Like your son, he is very well behaved, otherwise.  All I can tell you is that this has gotten much better, as he has gotten older.  He still cracks inappropriate jokes around me before thinking.  I have learned to laugh at things I don't think some parents would laugh at and to say, "Highly inappropriate around an adult.  No?"  He also pushes to the head of every line, but I think this is going to change when his peers tell him to stop, which at the age of twelve, is right around the corner.  He gets along well with his peers, so he is not going to continue behavior that angers them.

Good luck, and I would love to hear what drug the doctor thinks works best for impulsivity.  Hang in there!

My son is like that too. Very impulsive, doesn't think, just acts on what he thinks.

lillian, i think you are spot on - with age and peers impulsivity will lessen, unless he gets mixed up in the wrong crowd

My fear with an impulsive child .  So far, so good, though.  Most of his friends are nice, even a bit nerdy.  A bunch of computer geeks.

My other fear with impulsivity--driving.  Yikes, three more years!

dd is 10 now and less impulsive than she was a year ago.. maturity does play a role..

Hi ogram...I have no experience with stratera so I cant comment but with regard to stimulant medications, its all very individual in terms of how well the child responds to the medication. There is not a  better one or a not as good one. This is why children are put through a trial of meds when first starting stimulant medication as the goal is to acheive the right medication and the target dose for that particular child. When stimulant medication is working at maximum benenfit for the child (the stimulant medication that the child has been found to be most receptive to) the impulsivity tones down tremendously as the medication allows the child the ability to make a choice rather than leap before they look. Unfortunately, the only way to find out what works best for the child is to put them through a trial of meds as the goal is maximum benenfit and minimal side effects and because every child responds differently, its about what works best for the child, not what works best in general. Impulsivity in the ADHD child causes great cause for concern by parents because they dont look before they leap and this is why ADHD is not just a school problem as impulsivity and the ADHD child affects all areas of life.

OH MY GOSH....I was sure that my son was THE ONLY one who had to be 1st in line!!!!  Maybe it is an adhd trait

Of course, when we met last yr's teacher, and she sweetly asked"is there anything else I should know?"  I then told her about the line thing.  She sighed deeply and said "I ALWAYS get a child like that!"  And so she did last year!!!

My daughter is like that, likes to be first, competitive type. She's not ADD, however my son is Add and he could care less if he's in the front of the line, he's always last. My son really doesn't much care about competing, he thinks that's beneath him, he doesn't even like to be around kids his age. [QUOTE=i worry 2 much]
