Breathing issues with Adderral XR | ADHD Information

The doctor sounds like a--well, anyway . . . I feel I've heard/read a remote complaint about that, I think.  I would be willing to bet that the medication may have heightened her sensitivities to certain allergens--especially in the late spring/early summer months.  I never knew I had & never was diagnosed with asthma--but I absolutely have it when I am around cats, certain dog types, a concentration of dust/cardboard to the point where I must use an inhaler.  When it doesn't bother me I don't bother with it (take no meds for it, etc.)  It also could be entirely coincidental--except that she sounds young--7, right?  It's likely it has SOMETHING to do with the medicine.  Even if she has anxiety about taking it, it would be difficult to maintain that much of a psychosomatic reaction to it, I would think.  Try to find the doctor who subs for yours when he's out--keep asking around!  Keep us posted!Yes, please!  And then call your doctor or at least your pharmacist. My daughter started adderral xr in May 2005.  I didn't immediately notice the breathing/gasping issue, until about a month ago, in the heat of the summer.  I am wondering if anyone has had this experience.  She sighs often, like she keeps needing to take deep breaths.  I'm wondering if it's the medication or maybe if she has asthma, or severe allergies to something.  If anyone has has a similar experience please talk to me about it.  I thank you in advance.

I forgot to mention, I spoke with her pediatrician today, who swears that breathing problems are not caused by adderrall xr, and that it is perhaps an "emotional" reaction.  This kind of annoyed me, I think I would know if she was doing it in an emotional sense, you know what I mean? Since she is my child and I'm with her alot.  But she is doing this breathing thing over and over again, like she is having a hard time breathing.  He seemed annoyed and told me to bring her in tonight.

Or she could be having cardiac arrythmias - it usually cause breathing issues.  Check her pulse and if it feels unusually fast or irregular, she's probably having cardiac issues.

foggyguy38599.3519444444Adderall causes bronchial constriction after the bronchial dilation wears off i think. Ask her if it feels like she sometimes cant ever get a 'full' breath.

I'd be lying if I said I disagreed.

Also, OTC Primatene Mist can produce this same result if you take too much.  I get Albuterol now & it rules.

Ironically, when you can't breathe!

Yes! I have mild asthma and allergies. When I am on adderall, 20 mg XR, and I have caffeine, I end up having to gasp for air. I am decaffeinated now, but when I have the breathing episodes, I can generally trace it back to having something with caffeine. I am not sure of a direct correlation to this, still trial and error. Another way to describe the feeling is as though my throat is closing off, and an I have to swallow -odd. Sorry - not a very good description. More later - Hope your daughter is well.

Pretty much Ditto.  And it's now like 2 years later.  'Cept I switched to Short Release (from XR) & finally got upped (from 2O) to a whoppin' 25mg & simultaneously went generic.  My skin did NOT have a positive reaction to this & i now look like a bonafide meth addict & spend all my money on Bare Minerals (make-up made out of like crushed rocks that's supposed to be good for your skin) & Tanning appointments to camouflage all the sh!t coming out of my skin ...

Still better than not having the medicine, though.

what comes out of your skin?  i don't understand, but it sounds scary. The medicine!  Granted, I am VERY sensitive to motion/dermalogically speaking, but this it totally repellant.[QUOTE=apprehensive]

happens to me to, but not to that extent.  When I took ephedra, when it was legal, that always happened to me.

So I'm assuming it's the meds.  Maybe another doctor might help?  Or try reducing the intake dosage if possible.

I believe the heavy breathing is related to the speeding up of the heart caused by stimulants.  If this doesn't happen off the medication, it is likely somewhat or mostly caused by the adderall.

You might want to talk to another doctor about this if it persists.  As I do know that stimulants have caused this in me before.

Just as a side note, if your daughter does heavy aerobic exercise after taking the adderall, this will worsen the breathing problem (in my experience).

Have brown paper lunch bags to breathe into helps temporarily.  But you would want to see a doctor about this, and try to adjust adderall usage (if possible).
