Hi Guys!

Back again 2nite, just checking things out. This site is awesome. I have been

so blessed to have found it. I honestly thought I was going insane because

of (all) the stuff we have to deal with. It's good to know I'm not alone.

and someone (several someone's) totally understand... Thanks & i'll be back when I have some quiet time tomorrow...

Hi water spirit and needhelpw/son,

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I am moving my daughter from
a charter school to a regular public middle school next year because the
charter school doesn't have any art, music, sports, SHARE, or really
anything extracurricular and her interests are in the arts and athletics, not
academics. I want her to be successful at something in school and want
her to look forward to going. I'm trying to set up a meeting with the
counselor but we've been playing "phone tag" for a week. I need to make
sure she'll be getting what she needs because I, too have had experiences
where I've had to fight for what I believe will help her (and then
sometimes it still doesn't happen).

Water spirit - I'll look up Wright's Law tomorrow when I get a few minutes!
Needhelpw/son - hang in there with your struggles with the school
administration! Thanks again!

hello dylans mom and welcome.... does you son have a IEP... and if so is he in any special ed.. request in writing that your son be tested if he hasn't already been.... having a child with ADHD can be hard... mostly at school.. it is so hard for them to sit still for long period of time.. not to mention they seem to not know when to stop talking.... i know my sarah is this way... every teacher says she sure likes to talk.. some teachers just don't understand ADHD... GOOD LUCK... oh yea i'm also DILLONS mom...

sheri.m38842.8410069444Ok where to start. Well this is my first time, I feel a little better just reading other moms are having the same days I have. I have an almost 8 yo ds on concerta for about a yr. Ritalin prior to that for 6 months. Most of my trouble is school. Big surprise. My ds son has an older teacher this and seems to struggle with her. Last year he had an amazing teacher who really worked with all of us. We had a really hard week, so I spoke with her dooesn't seem to go anywhere. So I am requested a meeting with the principle. I am a little scared I don't want to come off as the overproctective mom. But I need some help. I know schools almost over this year but maybe we can get things started for next year. Any suggestions? Thanks If your son is taking Concerta then he must have a diagnosis. Send a letter to the head of special ed requesting that he be considered for an IEP under OHI (other health impaired). That can make all the difference.

Thanks so much for the reply. I am going to put those wheels in motion this week. Like I said it may be to late for this school year, but there's always next year. This year has been a learning experiance for all of us.

Like I said this has been different, different type of teacher. We had such an amazing teacher last year this was such a none issue. Know I have more information. We will get through this. He teacher now always tells me he's so smart....then theres the but.... He is really smart 2nd grade reading at a 5-6 grade level math the same. its writting that he struggles with we can and will work on that.  you have 3 kids... how old ? Thanks so much I will keep you posted

Hi Nevada Mom & Dylans mom

I'm new here to and I am soooo glad I found this site to b able

to get help, it's only been one day and I have learned so much.

IEP's at school are great, when you have a great case manager to work with.

I have had many problems, but more with the Admin. The teachers always back me up.Higher up they fight me on everything. It's amazing how much help my non adhd kid can get but special ed kids in my area get the worst unless I actually call and go up there and demand something. I want my son to repeat 8th grade because in NO WAY shape or form is he ready for high school and they are fighting me tooth and nail. It's crazy! I just want to do what's right for my son.

I hope the best 4 you and yours. w/b/s

Hi,

You're smart to meet with the school personnel now so you will be better prepared for next year. I recommend looking at the website www.wrightslaw.com to get educated on being a parent advocate. They really encourage knowledge is power and cooperation is better than confrontation.

I've had multiple meetings with school personnel for both my son who has ADHD and learning disabilities and qualifies for an IEP. My daughter has only ADHD and qualifies for a 504 plan but not an IEP. Look these terms up on Wrights law. Just remember you are your child's advocate, their voice, as you know your child best. Come prepared to any meetings but let the school personnel come up with the answers you want. Don't assume they will come up with the best answers on their own.

[/QUOTE] WOW that is great.... reading and math at 5-6 grade  yes i have 3 rugrats...  jamie just turned 21 yrs old...and just moved back in with me  i love her very much but she is a pig... very messing... then there is sarah she will be 18 yrs old in june.. she is ADHD and has a learning disab..her reading level is at about a 5-6 grade level..then there is dillon who just turned 4 yrs old on christmas day... he is most likely bipolar..we have had 4 doctors say he is bipolar but his new doctor doesn't want to dx him with it due to his age but he is treated with bipolar meds.. he is extremely hyper, violent and will rages... anyways welcome and i hope you stick around... this board is pretty fun... Hi - This is my first time writing - actually, I just found this forum and
would love to be able to hear and share stories with other mom's with kids
who have ADHD! There are some days when I feel like I'm just not going to
make it until my daughter gets thru school! I also wanted to reply to Dylan's
Mom that I was having similar issues when my daughter was in 4th grade
(she's in 6th now) and I had a great expereience attending a 3 hour
workshop on IEPs thru our local PEP (Parents Empowering Parents) office.
Before that, I had no idea how many rights I had had in helping to shape the
IEP. I'm very glad I found a place to read about others dealing with the same
issues I do! Thanks. Yes he has a dx. I am taking all of that to the school next week with me. I am working on getting us on track  now that I know my options.  I am more worried I will come off as the bossy overproctive mother who thinks she knows all. That is the last thing I want to do. I really think just hearing from everyone and how they are dealing is helping.
