How many adults lost weight on ADHD meds? | ADHD Information

Share
when i first started conserta, i dropped to exactly 100 lbs. I've been on concerta for the last 5 weeks and lost 5 pounds... which I didn't really need to... not complaining yet, but feel I have to really watch that I don't lose anymore.

I'm not looking to lose which is why I'm asking. Is it really all that common of a side effect on these meds or does it just happen to a small population? I'm nervous to begin taking this stuff which I have a feeling my dr. is on the verge of prescribing me.

Thanks.

When I Started Strattera I lost 35 pounds in 2 months. I'll admit I took advantage of the drug in the sense of diet control. Once I was down to the weight I wanted to be at I increased my food intake and have maintained weight pretty well. Now that I am on Concerta I get the same effects of it so I still need to make sure I keep eating. You just gotta remember to eat, and when you eat, eat a healthy amount. Its easy to go all day for me without any food but I know its not healthy for me so I just make sure I don't skip any meals.

**Caution** don't let your self loose weight too fast if weight loss is your goal (this is directed toward everybody.) Once I did, I was having some side effects from it. The most radical side effect was blacking out. I never did black out but every time I would exercise I would get light headed and I could see my vision narrow down to just a little dot in front of me. There was several times when I thought I was going out but fought threw it. now that I am maintaining a steady weight my body as caught up with it and I am fine now

-eat healthy

Stangcotic38969.420775463i lost 9 pounds in 9 weeks,nothing major.

I have lost around 7 kilos (15 lbs) in the last 5 weeks, and am continuing to lose weight at the rate of a little over 1 kilo (2.2 lbs) every week.

If i lose much more i will have to consider eating more to try and offset it. I currently weigh 55kg (120 lbs).

So long as you make sure you're eating enough, you won't have problems with losing weight (simply increase your caloric intake, etc if need be). Meds will affect every individual differently, so there's really no way of predicting how they will affect you.

I, personally, have been on adderall for a number of years and have not had problems with losing weight. I have an amazing metabolism and am thin by nature, so losing weight would probably be a red flag & my dr. would probably take me off of my meds. (Actually, I briefly went to a diff. dr. and she thought that I was anorexic & hesitated to fill my rx. It was very hard to get her to understand that I can eat a TON and not gain weight).

Thanks for the posts

I guess I want to know if the people who HAD WEIGHT TO LOSE were the ones that lost weight or if those that lost weight were thin already. I'm pretty thin already and don't want to lose - I'm wondering if those that need to lose a few pounds are the ones that experience weight loss and not those people who are thin already. Am I making sense??

ellej:  This is so your decision--not your doctor's, right?  I think unless you're out of options & are desperate you don't want to start meds because your doctor's rx-ing them for you.  When I started Adderall last year, I lost way too much weight, but now that my body's accustomed to it, I stay at just above 1OOlbs--I'm 5'3".  I don't like anyone noticing anything  about my body so I'm always ready to pour on whatever pounds I can.  I hate when people go "oh, you're so skinny" & "how do you stay so tiny?"--they've never seen me with my clothes off--gross!!!Yes, I believe that you are making sense. I think that, sometimes, those who wish to lose extra pounds that they're carrying take advantage of their increased self control on the meds, which leads to less eating, and more weight loss. Also, some people experience appetite suppression, and rather than eating anyways, some choose not to eat. (Which, of course, is a terrible choice if the person is not getting their essential nutrients, etc.)

ellej:  I've never been overweight in my life.   I've been on Adderall for 3 months and lost about 7 pounds...I'm down to about 148 (I'm 6 feet tall).  So, I'm working at not losing more weight...... Adderall just kills my appetite, but I'm able to eat, whenever if finally get around to it...now it's more like making a concerted effort to eat well and eat a lot while before it was "feeding the hunger"!

Anyone out there with good advice on healthy, low fat/low cholesterol foods to keep the weight on??!!

I have lost about 30 lbs since beginning  Adderall XR in  April.  Fortunately, I needed to lose the weight, so I am not concerned at all.  My daughter is 9, and takes it, and she only weighs about 62 lbs. She was thin to start with, and we have a very hard time keeping the weight on her.  The weight loss thing for me is hard. I am actually working on losing weight after having had my son (okay, so he is 2  1/2, but still ), and getting older I know my metabolism is slowing down. But I am exercising and trying to eat better and while I appreciate some appetite suppression I don't like the kind I get from my meds. It really kills my appetite and then I forget to eat, sometimes all day, especially when chasing after my son. Then when I try to sit down and eat I often have an aversion to food. Like I have gone so long without it that everything sounds gross to me and kind of makes me feel nauseous. I struggle to find something to eat that doesn't make my stomach turn somersaults. It only gets worse if I can't find anything in our house that sounds appealing. Last week I was feeling very ill because it was literally three days since I had eaten more than a few crackers and a couple of Cokes. I dislike this aspect of meds a lot. But no matter what type of stimulant or what dose I always have the same problem. I have been on brand name Ritalin, Ritalin SR, generic Ritalin, Adderall, Add. XR, Focalin, and Concerta. And at varying daily dosages from 20mg to 100mg depending on the medication. Does anyone else have this problem?

I have been on 10 mg tablets of adderall 3 times daily for about 2-3 months and I used to weigh 180 - 185 I now weigh 150 - 155  about a 30 lb. loss  My family and friends say I look like skelator but i feel great and the weight loss has drastically helped back  pain but i have found that eatiing 3-5 small meals a day will keep you wanting food I have found myself going a full day without eating much, you have to make yourself eat or I will forget about it.I'm the same way. I haven't lost weight and I eat better since getting treatment underway a number of years ago.

For what it's worth, I haven't lost any weight.

I could, probably.  But I am more aware of my hunger, and of my cravings.  And I am better able to get it together to eat a meal and I am definitely hungry when I don't eat.

It used to be that my eating was connected to a thought or an idea that I wanted to eat--not to feeling hungry.

The way my ADD brain worked seems to have affected so many areas of my life.
