In trying to get my son to read we came across something that seems to work.
Try a few audio books and let him read along with..they have them for all the childrens popular books and you might even try to let him just listen and imagine to some audio intertainment. Sometimes getting them to realize that their imagination is there without things like tv ect. helps. (kids today seem to have forgotten that they can live in a book with their imagination.) Technology has gotten so much better than years ago and our senses tend to forget how to do things like imagine stories in our head. We always listened to ZBS liberal arts tapes... The Jack Flanders Fourth Tower as a family and we just happened to notice that our son could hear them once and repeat word for word the entire thing. We started him off reading along with taped books and it worked.
Dear novelexpectatio:
By the way, If you are interested in HOOKED ON PHONICS the SAM'S club have it now for half of it cost. The reading part for 8.88. the UPC is 7-13974-12008-6.
The audio books Odieellen says, should be good, too.
Good luck!!!
Due to my daughter's attention and comprehension problem I could never keep her interested in hooked on phonics. She hated reading due to the fact that was her problem area and her attention was on everything but what I was trying to teach her. I am sure that the program is great if you know for sure that your child will sit and contian one self while trying to absorb the material. To me, it has to be what interest them. I spent a lot of money and had to sell due to my daughter having no interest in the programs that I presented to her. Which my daughter is difficult in nature and not all children will react the way my daughter did towards books and reading. I found the after school program with one on one help to be a mucher better gain for us and she actually brought her science grade from a D to an A.Dear novelexpectatio:
I have a program that every person I have spoken about it, says It works wonderful. I have used it with my son, but you have to be patience. My problem is that my son takes for ever to finish his homework, so most of the time we don't have time to use it.
It is "Hooked on Phonics" (learn to read) they also have Hooked on Math. It is pretty easy to use, it may take a few hours to understand how it works, but once you have everything set, it is easy. It has the intruction book (workbook) for every level, audio tapes, fash cards, books. Anyone can use it. They say 30 minutes daily is enough. The cost is about 0.00 (well, I bought both Math and Reading) A tutor can cost more than 0.00 in less than 20 lessons, and the program you can keep it or sale it, after you finish with it.
By the way, about my son (since you told me to keep you post it) I have not found any school like your in my area, but I'm still searching. However, I found a few that are not for ADHD but they might be very helpful. From now to the next school year, I must find something. I let you know...if I do.
Good luck!!!
Hi,
I need help. I am quickly becoming as overwhelmed as my 7 year old son and and his teacher are. Which learning to read programs work best for an adhd child?? tell me your success story. Did you use a tutor as well? My son's impulsive behavior is somewhat contained, with Concerta, however we're running into a brick wall with attention and comprehension. I have been told that he is not LD
Thanks
Marlene
Well if your son is having trouble to read then I consider that a problem just like with my daughter who is now ten. She has been through testing in school and they are ok with her below average reading which effects the rest of her work. She tested low average in everything with a few scores falling in the average range. They will not give her an IEP and I see that she is struggling in certin areas but excells in others. I finally found out that the testing the school does is not going to uncover and specific LD problems unless they are significant and the testing does not uncover mild dyslexia(reading problem) and dysgraphia (writing problem) I now have an appointment with a neroloigist for testing that will uncover a specific learning disabilites that the school would not catch unless it was significant.Sorry to butt in here but WOW I really like the reading to an animal idea. I will have to give it a try on my DD!
I watch a lot of Animal Planet. They showed a segment about children that had trouble reading, whatever the case may be. They had the children to read to a cat or dog. The animal will not judge the child's ability or inability to read. In fact the child will relax and rean better. Maybe you could try this. If you do let me know how it works.
It can make reading fun for all ages!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love that animal idea-
I have an ADD child and an ADHD child. They learned to read with Hooked On Phonics. It was very easy. They loved the one on one time with mom. All we used was the first level of the program, once they knew how to read I couldn't keep their faces out of a book.
Lots of people sell them on eBay (that is where we got ours and we will sell it there in a few years after 2 year old son can read)
