orange juice and concerta/stimulants | ADHD Information

When our son was on Adderall the pharmacist also told us no grapefruit juice, we also talked to the doctor about this and they told us just no grapefruit juice but others were ok.

chasemom, I've heard the same as you mentioned.

After we changed our orange juice routine(which was frequent) my son got to where he really doesn't want it any longer.  He prefers milk and  cranberry or apple juice in the morn.  We use the low sugar type of both juices.  I've seen a huge difference since orange juice has been to a bare minimum.

My ds has been taking his meds for 5 years. The pharmacist has never mentioned this to us. Thanks for letting us know.

Hi Chantelle,

Which adderall is your son taking?

Also some kids can metabolize meds very fast (in case it is not the orange juice).

I think the citrus juices are not banned per se, it is just that they should not be ingested within 1-2 hours of taking the simulant.  So you should possible give the juice at night or with the afternoon snack if the child is on a long acting form.  For the shorter acting forms that must be taken spread throughout the day, citrus juices would be harder to consume without affecting the absorption of the stimulant med.

Great Information.  My son just started adderall and takes it every morning with orange juice.

Its wearing off after 4 hours and he is crashing at school.  Im hoping this could be a reason.....

I read recently that you should not have the child take their pill (specifically the articles were talking about Concerta but I think it's the same with other stimulants as well) with Orange Juice, or any citrus beverage.  It apparently decreased the effectiveness of the medication.  I didn't know this up until a week or so ago, and that was what my daughter was taking her pill with in the morning.  Now I just have her use milk.

Just thought I'd pass this along to those who hadn't heard.  I would think the pharmacist would mention it when giving it to you for the first time, but I don't remember them saying anything.

Orange juice, grapefruit, pineapple, any citrus can effect the release of the meds.

And it is not just concerta, it is any stims. When dd took Adderall the pharmacist told us this.

thankyou for sharing this

i never know orange juice can effect meds,

fizzy drinks are banned in our house we all drink robbinsons

this might explan why school always phone an ask if my son as had is meds, even when he as had them

hes been on meds for nealy 5 yrs, an not once as the pharmacist mentioned any advice
