Dilated pupils | ADHD Information

Somerthing I have noticed about my ADHD DS over the last several years is that is pupils are often dilated in bright light.  I can never remember to ask my doctor about it.  He has taken Concerta for years. Can this cause it?

Thanks

My son is also on concerta. I have NOT noticed any dialated pupils with concerta, but boy oh boy was he a mess while taking adderall xr! His eyes were so dialated He looked like he was as high as a kite, his nose even ran.

We brought him in to his pediatrician who immediately stopped the adderall. We then started the psychophamacist visits since the ped. isn't a specialist in these meds or adhd. It was the best thing we did.

I will never forget how my son looked on adderall and he was only 6 He was also suffering horrible rebound and was very aggitated at school towards the kids in class the teacher told me. Definetely the wrong med for our son!

My son takes Concerta and his pupils are dialted with the meds as well.  I mentioned to our pediatrician, and she does not feel it is a problem.  I would speak to your doc, and make sure that they atleast are aware.

She has been off of milk for 3 days now (and on a zinc supplient- Innate 1x per day, fish oil - Nordic Naturals ProEFA 2x per day, and mineral suppliment- Nutri-spec Mighty Mins chewables 3x per day) and her pupils have shrunk noticibly. Her teachers have noticed a difference already. She is still a bit forgetful, but does not wander off in her mind as much, listens better and gets her work done more quickly. The fish oil pills have so much lemon flavor my daughter chews them with no bad taste.

She likes Rice Dreams milk substitute best, plus it comes in small packs I can send to school. I freeze them and they take the place of an ice pack in her lunch box. Rice Dreams is sweetened with a malted sugar that is ingested slowly. I also use Parkay buttery spray (no trans fats) Rice Cream ice-cream and veggie slices soy cheese. I'm going to try some different yogurt replacements this week.

Lawfus,

Glad things are going well.  Please keep me posted as to your progress.  My DS had milk allergies as a baby that he appeared to outgrow but maybe this is contributing to his ADHD.  Based on the posts here, it does sound like the Concerta is contributing to his pupil dilation.  I can't take him off at this point to see if that is the only cause but maybe this summer.

Thanks!

I am 29 and diagnosed a little over a month ago and have been on Vyvanse.  I have noticed that my eyes seem a little more dilated than they used to be.  I figured it might be a side effect of the medication.  I always wear sunglasses when I go out in the sun, I have blue eyes which are more sensitive to light and also I'm trying to keep from getting those wrinkles caused from squinting.  You might just try to keep some inexpensive sunglasses on hand for your son when he is outside since the dilation will make his eyes more sensitive.

I'm sure your doctor has an explanation for why this happens.

My daughter was having problems with attention and a friend referred me to a nutritionist, and I went yesterday. He took one look at her pupils, noted that they were dialated and said this was a reaction many children have to milk products. He said that there are compounds in milk that can act as opiates to some people. He suggested that I take her off of all milk products. He also noted signs of some other deficiencies in nutrients that I had seen mentioned in ADHD literature. I am hopeful that this is the answer. I recommend that all children get checked for nutritional deficiencies before trying meds.
