I, too, have had gastric bypass and thank you for your input! I was wondering what effect Adderall would have if ground into a powder and diluted with a small amount of water?
Also, I wanted to make you aware that there is a new liquid medication for ADHD named ProCentra--It is dextroamphetamine and comes in 5mg/5ml dosing. Because it is a liquid don't we bypass graduates absorb it better?
Any input you can give me would help immensly! Thanks again!

Daytrana patchstegun, if your doc is well versed on ADHD and the meds for it then he or she wont think your a druggie and if that was the case I would change my doc.. Its critical that you feel comfortable talking to your doc about any mediation your taking and as any ADHD and med management expert knows, the patient has to go through a trial of medication before the right med and dose are found for the individual. This can take a while for some. You have really good questions whcih you should also discuss with your doctors since you have also had gastric bypass surgery. That's a very signficant factor in terms of absorption. What type of doctor is the prescribing doctor for your ADHD meds?
He's my psychiatrist. I know I should be able to talk to him and everything you said makes sense, it's just that I'm so afraid he's going to take all the meds away from me, and then how will I survive?I'm nearly 5 years post GPS, and the best solution I found was getting my Pdoc to split my dosage in half that I take once in the morning and again just after eating lunch. You are dead right about the full pouch though, otherwise its money, and often the day, wasted.
I'm also on Adderall (or rather the generic) and we found that the ER version tended to give me a huge high about 2 hrs after taking it and by lunch I was crashing hard. Splitting my daily dosage has worked well for a bit over 3 years now, considering I was diagnosed ADHD after surgery.
It may take some experimentation on the dosage, I take a 1/2 dose more in the morning than I do in the afternoon, but its just what we found worked better for me.
Thank you Mossberg1972. This information will be extremely helpful for those on ADHD meds who have had or awaiting gastric bypass surgery. Welcome
I have found that after I had gastric bypass surgery that the absorption rate of medicine decreases significantly and especially with a stimulant like Adderall and drugs like it that are stimulants and speed the system up. If taken on an empty stomach the medications will dump out of you quickly. So I tried it with food and not much difference. So I tried to figure out a way to keep the medicine from wasting because of its effects on the system and how it speeds up the metabolism and increases heart rate, raises your core temperature, increases brain function, also increased are awareness, diligence, preciousness, and great attention to detail are some of the common side effects that are attributed to taking this medication. So my point is I'm having dumping which it is commonly called in gastric bypass patients after surgery. But is increased by the medication so that the wasting of medicine is a concern and have been found to be a problem for me, because the effectiveness of the medicine is not reached or not even nearly reached in the extended release capsules. So a way around this to use the capsule in a full pouch or as you refer to it as a stomach. Another problem with that is that the pouch does not carry enough acid to digest the food or the medication in the stomach but rather does it in the intestine wear the juices from your old stomach meet up with the food in the small intestine where the absorption rate is even less found because part of the intestine that absorbs the food has been cut away during the surgery process making you malnourished or malabsorption.
To combat this I have found a couple ways 1. Is to use peanut butter and open the capsule and pour it on to the peanut butter and mix it in and swallow the peanut butter with a little bit of water. 2. To eat a full meal and drink very little fluids at the time of breakfast which is commonly when most people that take Adderall are prescribed to take it. Now waiting for the medicine to digest a little and then drink a full glass of water after about an hour. This will help the medicine to absorb and get a good start on its release as a time release capsule. Hint: the food is a binding agent that helps the medicine stay in your system for a longer period of time and not be dumped because of the surgery and the stimulant aspect of the medicine. So eating a high fiber diet & eating a diet rich in density or low in hydration ( DRY FOOD THAT PACKS WELL ) will help the medicine to bond to these fibers and food not allowing most of time the medicine to be dumped. The key to this is to use as little of fluids as possible for the first 1 to 2 hours if possible and eliminate a dumping of all the food and medication. Using the food as a binder to allow medication time to work and breakdown. If you can slow the process down then your chances of not wasting or dumping medications is lessened with the food and little fluids for the first few hours after taking any medication especially those that are stimulants. But always ask your Dr. If this is good for you and if it would work for you. Always follow doctors' directions I am merely passing this on to those who have or are in the same situation I am in.
