I've been on adderal for a couple months now. Lately I've been noticing I really, really crave caffiene and chocolate. Anyone else like this? All I want to do now is take my adderal, drink coffee and then eat chocolate once the adderal starts to wear off. Any ideas on why this craving would be so strong on adderal?
thanks,
I found this article that talks about why ADDers may crave chocolate and other things.
Here is a quote from the artical and the link.
"I have worked with many ADD adults who are addicted to sugar, especially chocolate which also contains caffeine. They find that eating sugar helps them stay alert, calm, and focused. Prior to ADD treatment many report drinking 6-12 sugar sodas, several cups of coffee with sugar, and constantly nibbling on candy and sweets throughout the day. It is impossible to sort out what is pure sugar craving when it is mixed with the stimulating effects of caffeine on the ADD brain. "

Hope this helps
Thank you for your responses. I read the article and found it to be interesting. I do know that before I knew I was ADD and when my children were very young I would crave sugar when I was sleep deprived.
The craving for chocolate and caffiene incresed when I went on adderall- not initially but after the first month or so. I've been on it now for about 2 months and have noticed the cravings within the last couple weeks.
I wondered if it has something to do with L-Tyrosine. I thought I read somewhere that this is found in chocolate-- or is that wishful thinking :)
I'll take a shot at that. The reason you crave caffinated products is because your mind still wants to be stimulated like it is on the adderall. It's pretty much subconsious but you can catch it and resist.
Caffine and nicotine are highly addictive in people with ADD. With the natural need to be stimulated; drugs like caffine and nicotine give the stimulant needed but only for a short period of time. When on adderall, the mind is going through alot of stimulation. When the adderall wears off, the mind wants and almost needs some sort of stimulation.
I have been smoking since I was 18. Unfortanetly now that I found out that I had ADHD 2 months ago, I never knew I was naturally compensating for my lack of frontal lobe activity with nicotine. I'm on adderall, 20mg twice a day, and it helps me focus but I want to smoke so much more when I am on it. When I do, I tend to overstimulate myself pretty much making the prescription useless and gives me a headache.
hersey s'mores bars !!!!!I was dropping weight too on the adderall so maybe the craving for chocolate was just a way for my body to get fast calories- who knows? My appetite is weird so i don't eat as well on adderall but can eat junk food. I know thats not good.
I did take the L-tyrosine and my unscientific opinion is it helps.
I've been getting into Klondike ice cream bars.......tht will pack on the pounds! :)
Oh yeah - weight loss like over night. I wasn't heavy before either, and am now wearing the clothes that are too small for my teen. I've never been into sweets much at all in my life either, but now I have my stash of mini Nestle Crunches. Oh the dry mouth...l. I am constantly putting things in my mouth, and smoking like a chimney. I think I'm eating more than I had in many years and just keep getting smaller - if I lose much more weight, I'll have to get off the Adderall. When the stretchy size 4s are falling off a person that wore size 9 mostly, I'm getting a little nervous, but I keep eating.
I hear ya I ate a hole bag of mini candy bars last night. When I was on adderall I lost a bunch of weight I didn't eat much but now I'm on ritalin and I am always hungry I constantly go down to 120lbs. but then my body goes back to 130lbs. I think my body just likes to be at 130lbs. I'm not obsessed about my weight but it was so cool when I was on adderall and I lost weight with out trying especially when I've had two children. anyway chocolate is a comfort food I love to lay on the couch watch a movie and eat chocolate.
