HI there,
Just wondering what a fair treatment would be in order to stop a little girl from leaning back in her chair. She's been taken off her meds and can't sit still. In the past week, she has fell three times!! I ahve heard of people asking kids to stand but I don't know about that??
ANY suggestions would HELP
Lynne
My son had a teacher that was very good at dealing with ADHD children. He was leaning back in his chair constantly. She had a one piece desk brought in that had no chair. It worked well. ( He was in the fourth grade at the time. )
at our school if you kept doing that you'd be having a detention, or sitting in the principles office. i'm not sure what to do on that one.Hmm...wondering if your 'my' son's teacher and just saying it 'is' a little girl...(joking here) but anyway our son does this ALL the time and the entire class laughs when he falls. AT HOME: I gave him a crate (yes a plastic crate) to sit on. It's awkward for him because he really has to stretch to reach the table so it really makes him stop and think...does he want to sit lower and NOT fall? Or does he want his chair back and sit like he should? It made him stop and think: he now has his chair back.
As an ex-teacher, I am for the chair being connected to the desk. It works and does not make the kid stand out. If the kids are sitting at tables, have the kid try sitting on a low stool. Try a disc-o-sit, the school OT should be able to provide this. It gives the child the movement they are seeking from leaning back. It is just a round rubber cushion with little bumps and you fill it with air. Make sure you don't over fill it because then it can be too difficult to sit on-try different levels of air until she likes it. They can also use this to sit on the floor during reading or circle time. Also, build in movement breaks, when she starts leaning have her do an errand for you using something heavy like books to carry. She is sensory seeking and these things might give her what she needs. Hey EastWest, cool idea! I've never seen one of these chairs. I'm going to investigate.I see even non adhd kids do this. I told our son it could hurt him and the chair both.
