GO FOR IT!!!

Those dogs are great, wonderful breed, and ADHD kids usually are fantastic with pets.

It's funny you say that! My son is so ruff with people, but he treats our cats like they are made of delicate crystal... they like him better than they like me!!!!

I think the dog on Frasier was a Jack Russell- I like that kind of dog.

We have two miniature dachshunds and our kids love them.  We have to watch (and teach) our ADHD'er around them.  He can aggrivate them some but for the most part they get along well!  I think it's great for kids to have pets.Jack Russells need lots and lots of play time, and it helps to have some yard space for running.  They are very active, especially males.  They are GREAT with kids, and the boys will find it hugely entertaining how they can throw a ball FAR away (even in the dark), and a Jack Russell will have it back in their hands in no time.  They are some seriously active and fun dogs for kids.

I do know about dogs as I am a breeder of Poodles.  I know when I am searching for a pet home for mine, I make sure the children are at least 5 or older as any younger can affectionately pull on hair or a leg and cause pain for the animal which they meaning the animal is not to likely to forget.  As far as a male versus a female?  I have both.  I find the females to be just as protective as the males.  Most of the time you will find males to be territorial and will not hesitate to mark his spot.  Females on the other hand can be very bitchy somestimes as all of us females can get even if they have been spayed.  I am sure any dog owner will tell you that it will take time for the animal to get use to the family and know it's limitations.

I do suggest that you crate train which means the dog would become accustomed to sleeping in a crate at night.  It not only protects your home from soiling but it gives the dog a place of it's own to feel secure in.

I don't know anything about Jack Russell terriers, but I do know about ADHDers and dogs.  My 12-year-old ADHD son is amazing with our cockapoo.  We've had our dog for 2-plus years, and my son takes a lot of responsibility for the dog.  He feeds him every morning and takes him on walks most afternoons.  I also think our dog is a great comfort when my son is feeling down about various issues.

I don't have Jack Russels but I've heard they are great with kids. We do have a Pitbull & a terrier/dalmation and a cat. I think its great that when theres no one for my DD to play with the dogs are great playmates. And the pitbull is SO protective of her, she even checks on my dd several times throughout the night. Having pets also teaches responsibility. My dd never forgets to feed or water her furry friends; she even brushes their teeth (Yes, my dogs have their own toothbrushes & beef flavored toothpaste)!

A Jack Russell Terrier is like having a ADHD child....they are high maintenance and stubborn.......they are great fun and they are frustrating...

Our Rocky is 4 years old, he goes almost everywhere with us.  He has only been on sleepovers with my daughters as he cries when there is no one there for him.  Yes he is also a SUCK!!   He is really good with the girls and has lots of energy to play with them.  They are a high-strung breed so you need to have a big yard, or lots of room for the to run....you don't want them to get bored (they get even!!)  Good Luck if you get one......They are a fun little dog

I'm wondering if there are any pet owners amongst us on this board.  If so, please advise.  My husband's co-worker is offering us a puppy of a purebred Jack Russell Terrier after the pup is weaned.  I've owned work dogs in the past as has my husband, so we're not fearful of the work that it will take to care for the dog.   Our sons are 6 and 9.  My older boy is ADHD.  My younger son isn't.  I'm just wondering if there are any success stories of ADHD children with pets.  We have a month to contemplate our decision.  We're doing all we can to educate ourselves regarding the breed and the pros and cons of adding this new addition to our family.  Any input or advice (positive or negative) would be greatly appreciated, and, oh yeah, does adopting either sex, male or female, make a difference?

Thanks!

As far as the sex of the dog, males have a tendency to be more aggressive, in general, but that breed is not known as an aggressive breed, so you shouldn't have much problem.

I love Jack Russel Terriers .. I think that they can be pretty destructive if they are not entertained though.  So I would make sure that you can accomdate a smart feisty dog.  They are a super breed.  My next dog is going to be a Jack Russel.   Just awesome dogs!

I have a Boxer, and a cat. I know that the Jack russell dogs are great with kids. Yes, i was told by a therpist that Add kids are great with pets, they need to accept responsibility, and they can take part in caring for the dog as well as the pet providing therpy for the child with a disorder. Unfortunetly no pets here except a fish.  My girl wants an animal but is allergic to animal dander and cannot. My son loves his animals, at our house we have  two cats, and a Guinea pig, at his dad and step moms they have four dogs and four cats. He really enjoys taking care of them and playing with them. Your family would have a blast with a dog.we  have a miniture austrailian shepherd.  i was a little worried about getting what i considered a "small" dog.  we had a 120 pound german shepherd  before and the new dog would only get to be 50 pounds or so.

i have three very energetic kids (one "adhd") and was concerned they would be too rough/active for a smaller dog.  WRONG!  the dog thinks he's 120 pounds and woe to the uninvited adult entering our yard!

i think if the dog has a good temperment and a loving home, whatever " kinks" can be worked out.  my kids did a great job helping train our dog and like to tell others  "the story" of how he got his name -which they all came up with.

i think active kids/adders need high energy/fiesty dogs.  sounds like a jack russell fits the bill!  you may need sedative tho!
